Christianity: Blind Faith or Reason?
By Debbie O’Hara
Recently we received big news that one time world-class atheist philosopher, Anthony Flew, has become a theist. Though he still does not claim to believe in a personal God, he states, "It now seems to me that the findings of more than fifty years of DNA research have provided materials for a new and enormously powerful argument to design." Now that he is loosened from the chains of his atheism it will be interesting to see if he discovers the Creator I know, and if others will follow the path from darkness to light.
After every one of my columns I hear from people who identify themselves as atheists. These deniers of God consider themselves logical thinkers while characterizing Christians as uneducated and ignorant. They accuse Christians of following faith blindly rather than using logic by looking at evidence "scientifically" and judging the facts. They wonder how Christians dare to claim that they have the truth when scientific facts "prove" them wrong. They claim that there is "no evidence" that there is a God and therefore He is a fairy tale. It appears that many atheists think the big problems of mankind could be solved by getting rid of the "myth" of God and being more "realistic".
While Christians certainly do accept some things on faith (as every person in the world does) it is by no means a blind faith. Take for example that our universe could have begun in only two possible ways. Either Someone created it, or it made itself. While no one was there to see how it happened, the Bible tells us, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." (Genesis 1:1.) By looking at the evidence, we can see that the biblical account is true. We see an orderly universe and very complex life forms which point to a Designer. Order, information and intelligence can only come about from an intelligent designer. That is a logical and scientific conclusion. We would never look at a watch, a computer or an aircraft and assume that they made themselves. And life is so much more complex! In his book, "The Blind Watchmaker", leading evolutionist Richard Dawkins admits that a single cell, the smallest living unit, contains "a digitally coded database larger…than all 30 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica put together."[1] And the human body is made of trillions of such cells all performing different functions! Can it be anything but blind faith that would make an atheist believe that this could happen all by itself?
Atheists believe that all the matter in the universe created itself. Many of them believe that everything we see came about as the result of an explosion, a Big Bang. There was nothing and then it exploded! How is that called science? Where did the matter come from that exploded? Where did the energy come from to cause the explosion? No one has ever seen matter create itself from nothing nor have they ever seen an explosion create order - only destruction and chaos. Since not a single person was there at the beginning, creation and evolution are both theories based on religious faith. Yet Christianity, the faith that fits the facts is banned from many classrooms while the faith that spreads illogical nonsense about matter creating itself and explosions causing order is promoted by government schools with many KNOWN lies printed in the textbooks[2] at taxpayer expense.
Atheists must believe in "spontaneous generation" (life coming from non-life) which was scientifically disproved over 200 years ago. What's interesting is that the entire food supply of the world depends on evolution not being true.[3] Evolution teaches that energy plus matter can occasionally create new life. If that was the case, when we open a jar of peanut butter or some other such foodstuff that has been treated with heat and light, we should at least on rare occasion find "new life". (Especially in the billion or so experiments we conduct every year.) Aren't we glad that this is not the case?
British Mathematician, Sir Frederick Hoyle, stated "The likelihood of the formation of life from inanimate matter is one to a number with 40,000 noughts (zeros) after it … It is big enough to bury Darwin and the whole theory of evolution… if the beginnings of life were not random, they must therefore have been the product of purposeful intelligence."[4] Atheism is not based on science, but faith. In fact I would call atheism a "blind faith" as science does not contradict the Bible, but it does contradict atheism.
If the biblical God does not exist, how do atheists explain biblical passages that gave us insights into the physical world centuries before their recent discoveries by scientists?[5] Jonah 2:5,6 talks about mountains on the ocean floor - a discovery made by scientists just this past century. Isaiah 40:22 talks about the circle of the earth. Many people even during the time of Columbus thought the world was flat. Job 26:7 says that God hangs the earth on nothing. How many holy books tell us that the world was on the back of a great turtle or held up by Atlas, etc.? Hebrews 11:3 states that the worlds were framed by the word of God and that things that are seen were not made of things that are visible. Only recently have scientists discovered that all things in the universe are made up of sub-atomic particles unable to be seen. The Bible contains no scientific errors though it was written thousands of years ago. There are many other such passages that gave us insights into our physical world centuries before man knew about them like nuclear fission, the hydrologic cycle, dinosaurs, ocean currents, etc. that cannot be explained unless we understand that it is the Creator of the universe who has passed down this information to us in His Holy Word.
How can we know that the God of the Bible is the One True God? One of the greatest evidences is the 20th century discovery by scientists that the world is indeed finite and that space, time and matter had a beginning just like the Bible states. That means that the Creator of the universe had to be independent of time and space. There is only one holy book whose God declares Himself to be independent of time and space and that is the God of the Holy Bible. (II Tim.1: 8, 9. Also check out the first chapter of Colossians which tells us who the Creator is - Jesus Christ.)
For atheists to tell us that there is no evidence for God is intellectually dishonest. The Apostle Peter stated it right when he talked about the scoffers who were "willingly ignorant" (2 Peter 3:5). The problem with atheists is not that there is no evidence for God but that they do NOT WANT to believe the evidence because they don't want there to be a God. If there is a Creator God it would mean that every man would be accountable to a Higher Power for his every word and deed, and that is unthinkable to an atheist. The atheist does not want to follow the laws of God but to do "his own thing" with impunity.
The scientific record fits the creation model not the atheist's model of evolution. The teaching of creation was once the norm in this country but the truth is now being intentionally suppressed. The last laws banning the teaching of evolution in our schools were rescinded in the 1960's. The wealthy elite who control our government schools want us to believe that Christianity is a myth - that it is just one opinion (and a bad opinion at that) among many. But when such strong evidence points to the fact that the Christian message is true, why is there such a concerted effort to destroy it?
"We have staked the whole future of American civilization, not upon the power of government. Far from it. We have staked the whole future of all of our political institutions upon the capacity of mankind for self government; upon the capacity of each of us to govern ourselves, to control ourselves, to sustain ourselves according to the 10 Commandments of God." James Madison - "Father of the Constitution" and Fourth President of the United States
The words of James Madison hold the key. The America that was handed down to us by our Founders no longer exists. Evil men, who covet power over their fellowmen above all else, have worked hard to do away with our heritage of self-government which was based upon the laws of God. They don't believe in "government by the people" like our nation's Founders did. They believe instead in an all-powerful ruling elite where the wealthy and powerful like themselves are in full control of the people. They have succeeded in throwing out God's Ten Commandments that Madison said we needed in order to control and sustain ourselves. We have lost our compass and are in a moral freefall. Without God there is no right and wrong and the people are left at the mercy of the current whims of whoever holds power. God's Ten Commandments are dreaded by the tyrants of the world because "thou shalt not kill" and "thou shalt not steal" like all the other commandments apply to ALL men including government officials! Power hungry men can't have people believing that!
While the atheists claim that belief in God is the cause of the major problems in our world, the exact opposite is true. Atheism was the basis for the rise of racism, socialism, fascism, communism and the murder of tens of millions of innocent "inferiors" by their own governments in the 20th century alone. And that will be nothing compared to the nightmare being prepared for us in the planned merger of America with the other socialist nations of the world into a totalitarian socialist world order into which God doesn't fit. One has to be willfully blind to not see that America is fast becoming a police state.
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason people of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here." Patrick Henry - lawyer, patriot, three-time governor of Virginia
While we are fed the garbage that all belief systems are equal, try finding freedom of religion in a Muslim or Hindu country. It is no accident that the United States, the freest nation on earth, was based on the marvelous principles of Christianity. It is the only religion upon which true freedom can be built because every individual life has intrinsic worth in the eyes of the Creator.
The accusation by many atheists that belief in Christianity is illogical and constitutes a blind faith is completely unfounded. It is a religion that has been sorely tried and tested for thousands of years. Profound evidence, both physical and spiritual, proves it to be true.
"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse." Romans 1:20
