“He Is” - the promise of peace (verse 5:5a)
Ruler of the world from Bethlehem
Messenger With Beautiful Feet
the feet of one who Brings Good News
In Micah - in poetic form - we see prophecy alternating between messages of Judgment, Blessing, and Hope
Nelson - The New Open Bible - NKJV Study Edition - “Micah is the prophet of the downtrodden and exploited people of Judean society.”
We like to avoid talking about the anger of God, but Micah speaks directly to why God is angry.
He also has messages of hope!
Hallmark has Christmas in July
Today we have Christmas in August
When the wise men arrived in Israel, they asked King Herod where the new great king was born so that they might worship him. The scholars went and searched and came back with a 700 year old prophecy found within our scripture reading this morning.
Please stand as we honor the reading of God’s Word.
Micah 5:1–4 NIV
1 Marshal your troops now, city of troops, for a siege is laid against us. They will strike Israel’s ruler on the cheek with a rod. 2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” 3 Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. 4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
VERSE 5a “And he will be their peace.”

ANCIENT

Ancient
The promise of the ruler is relevant today
Jesus - First coming - Second Coming
The throne of David - the Davidic covenant
Older than that...
John 1 - The WORD
Revelation 1:8 NIV
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

RESPONSE

OT - Micah 6 in particular - religious rituals and sacrifices - how shall I please the Lord?
bow down to Him?
burnt offerings for him?
thousands of rams for Him?
my first born as a sacrifice?
Micah 6:8 NIV
8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
A beautiful description of a gospel lifestyle.
God is more interested in our everyday lives than in our religious rituals.
Doesn’t matter that you may be “small” in the worlds eyes - you will do God-sized things if you live for Him each and every day.
An old promise of hope that can be lived out anew each day.
Jesus is the promised ancient One who was born in Bethlehem who lives and rules today and for eternity.
