In Him

Good morning and welcome to Dishman Baptist Church. Please open your Bibles with me to Ephesians 1.
This morning is going to be a bit different than our norm. I was supposed to be on vacation this week but in reality this week - and really the last 48 hours - have proven to be incredibly challenging.
Sometimes you write sermons for other people - the passage must first speak to you and impact your life to be sure
Sometimes you write a sermon as a result of external events - Sept. 11
Sometimes you write a sermon because it is exactly what you need to hear and be reassured - this morning is that type of sermon.
No one could have prepared for what the last 18 months have been like under the threat of this pandemic, the constant changes in both information and mandates.
Ephesians 1:7 CSB
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace
The Puritans were famous for their sermons that were basically lists of points. This morning I have a sermon much like that which is simply a listing of what it means to be In Him - the things that we have by virtue of being found in Christ.
We must never forget that even with all of these benefits that are imparted to us - the key point is that we are found in Christ.
Colossians 3:3 CSB
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
300 Quotations and Prayers for Christmas Whatever Christ Did, He Did for You

Whatever Christ did, if you belong to those who are in Him, He did for you. So that Christ circumcised or Christ crucified, Christ dead or Christ living, Christ buried or Christ risen, you are a partaker of all that He did and all that He is, for you are reckoned as one with Him. See then, the joy and comfort of the incarnation of Christ. Does Jesus, as man, take manhood up to heaven? He has taken me up there. Father Adam fell, and I fell for I was in him. The Lord Jesus Christ rises, and I rise if I am in Him.

CHARLES SPURGEON

Let’s now look into what it means to be in Christ - to reassure and to comfort our souls as we may be wearied in the current battles that we are faced with

We have…Redemption

Real Redemption
The greatest need of any human being is redemption
We are in bondage to sin if we are outside of Christ
When we are in Him we are slave
doulos
“To be a Christian is to be a slave of Christ.”
John 8:35–36 CSB
A slave does not remain in the household forever, but a son does remain forever. So if the Son sets you free, you really will be free.
This can only be found in Christ - and the redemption He purchased would be meaningless if there were any other way or that we could achieve it on our own
“How foolish it was of Christ to purchase for us at the price of his shed blood the Spirit we did not need, in order that we might be given a facility in keeping the commandments, who we already have one by nature.” ― Martin Luther, The Bondage of the Will
Matthew 20:28 CSB
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

We have…Peace

Forensic Peace
Romans 5:1 CSB
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Cessation of hostilities
The challenge is that our nature is much more like Afghanistan than Switzerland…the beauty is that the peace that has been purchased for us is not dependent upon us
Mental Peace
Philippians 4:6–7 CSB
Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 1:2 CSB
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We have…Hope

This is not all there is
This is not the end
There is more to look forward to
And that hope is something that we should be living in even now
300 Sermon Illustrations from Charles Spurgeon Heaven Is as Good as Yours (John 14:2–3; Romans 8:24–25)

You get advice from a merchant with whom you have traded beyond the sea: He says, “I have procured the goods you have ordered and will send them by the next vessel. It will probably arrive at such-and-such a time.” Another trader calls in and asks you whether you wish to buy the same goods, and you reply, “No, I have them.” Have you spoken the truth? Certainly, for though you do not have them in your warehouse, they are invoiced to you. You know they are on the way, and you are so accustomed to trust your foreign correspondent that you regard the goods as yours. The deed is done that makes them yours.

So it is with heaven, with perfection, with immortality: The deed is done, which makes these the heritage of saints. I have advices from One whom I cannot doubt, even my Lord, that he has gone to heaven to prepare a place for me, and that he will come again and receive me to himself.

We have…Love

True love…not the sappy love or the fake love talked about today
Lindsey Stirling song “love’s just a feeling, some kind of emotion”
Love is more than simply a feeling that can change
There is nothing in us to evoke God’s love

The only ground of God’s love is his love. The ground of God’s love is only and wholly in himself. There is neither portion nor proportion in us to draw his love. There is no love nor loveliness in us that should cause a beam of his love to shine upon us.

THOMAS BROOKS

His love is not “reckless” - it is perfect and calculated and purposeful
Romans 5:8 CSB
But God proves his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

We have…Assurance

This is the second greatest need of a Christian
Real Confidence
Not the idea that is taught in many churches that we are redeemed and then have to keep ourselves saved by our obedience - if that were the case no one would be saved
We cannot lose what we did not purchase
John 10:16 CSB
But I have other sheep that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.
John 6:37 CSB
Everyone the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will never cast out.
John 6:40 CSB
For this is the will of my Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him will have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
300 Quotations for Preachers Assurance without Regard to Circumstances

God sometimes marvellously raises the souls of his saints with some close and near approaches unto them—gives them a sense of his eternal love, a taste of the embraces of his Son and the inhabitation of the Spirit, without the least intervening disturbance; then this is their assurance. But this life is not a season to be always taking wages in. Our work is not yet done; we are not always to abide in this mount; we must down again into the battle—fight again, cry again, complain again. Shall the soul be thought now to have lost its assurance? Not at all. It had before assurance with joy, triumph, and exultation; it has it now, or may have, with wrestling, cries, tears, and supplications. And a man’s assurance may be as good, as true, when he lies on the earth with a sense of sin, as when he is carried up to the third heaven with a sense of love and foretaste of glory.

JOHN OWEN

Romans 8:38–39 CSB
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

We have…Comfort

This goes hand in hand with peace - it is near to the same but it is not the same
We can have peace without being comforted

We have…Forgiveness

We have all-time, all-encompassing forgiveness for our sins
Past sins
Present sins
Future sins
I know we talked about this last week but some of us need reminded that we’re even forgiven for the sins we committed during this week
300 Quotations for Preachers from the Modern Church Christ’s Forgiveness Overcomes Our Weaknesses

Let all the world know that the Lord Jesus will not cast away His believing people because of short-comings and infirmities. The husband does not put away his wife because he finds failings in her. The mother does not forsake her infant because it is weak, feeble, and ignorant. And the Lord Christ does not cast off poor sinners who have committed their souls into His hands because He sees in them blemishes and imperfections. Oh! No! It is His glory to pass over the faults of His people, and heal their backslidings,—to make much of their weak graces, and to pardon their many faults.

J. C. RYLE

We have…An Advocate

Oh to know that we have One who stands at the throne and speaks on our behalf
300 Quotations for Preachers from the Reformation Cranmer’s Definition of the True Christian Faith

The very sure and lively Christian faith is not only to believe all things of God that are contained in holy Scripture, but also is an earnest trust and confidence in God, that he does regard us, and has care of us, as the father of the child whom he loves, and that he will be merciful unto us for his only son’s sake, and that we have our Saviour Christ, our perpetual advocate and priest, in whose only merits, oblation, and suffering we trust that our offences are continually washed and purged, whenever we, repenting truly, return to him with our whole heart, steadfastly determining with ourselves, through his grace, to obey and serve him in keeping his commandments, and never to turn back again to sin. Such is the true faith that the Scripture does so much commend.

THOMAS CRANMER

Hebrews 7:25 CSB
Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, since he always lives to intercede for them.
1 Timothy 2:5 CSB
For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,
We are a very poor lawyer - the man who represents himself in court has a fool for a client
How much more so in God’s court where we are completely guilty and have zero case
Yet Christ is our Advocate - He stands in argues in our favor even while the wounds, the scars that mar His hands, feet and sides were put there by the very sins He is arguing to expunge.

We have…Protection

John 10:11 CSB
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

We have…Grace

Saving Grace
Sustaining Grace

It is in the nature of this grace to grow and increase unto the end. As rivers, the nearer they come unto the ocean where they tend, the more they increase their waters, and speed their streams; so will grace flow more freely and fully in its near approaches to the ocean of glory.

JOHN OWEN

We have…Mercy

God’s mercy is so great that you may sooner drain the sea of its water, or deprive the sun of his light, or make space too narrow, than diminish the great mercy of God.

CHARLES SPURGEON

We have…Joy

There is precious little joy in the world today
John 15:11 CSB
“I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.
300 Quotations for Preachers Source of Life, Sum of Excellence, Fulness of Joy

To be in Christ is the source of the Christian’s life; to be like Christ is the sum of his excellence; to be with Christ is the fulness of his joy.

CHARLES HODGE

300 Quotations for Preachers from the Puritans Joy and Contentment in Devotion

Never does a soul know what solid joy and substantial pleasure is till, once being weary of itself, it renounces all propriety, gives itself up to the author of its being, and feels itself become a hallowed and devoted thing; and can say from an inward sense and feeling, My beloved is mine (I account all his interest mine own) and I am his: I am content to be anything for him, and care not for myself, but that I may serve him.

HENRY SCOUGAL

We have…Confidence

Not because of what we believe but because of who we believe in
John 14:1 CSB
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.

We have…Unity

If Christians are ever to be united, they must be united in Christ, their living head and the source of their spiritual life.

PHILIP SCHAFF

What is the purpose of unity?
To glorify God
Unity is not found in using Christ as a mascot or a rallying cry
vaccine and mask illustration
Christ is not a rally point or simply an example to be waved about - He is our Savior and our King
It is not all roses though....

We have…Tribulation

John 15:18 CSB
“If the world hates you, understand that it hated me before it hated you.
The world hated Christ - but it can’t get to Him now
It can get to us and we are the prime target
Colossians 1:24 CSB
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and I am completing in my flesh what is lacking in Christ’s afflictions for his body, that is, the church.
There is nothing lacking in Christ’s afflictions - it is that the world cannot inflict pain or trials on Christ and so they attack His followers
House churches in Afghanistan
Churches in Alberta
America is easy because we have had it so easy for so long that we have no backbone

We have…Christ

John 17:3 CSB
This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ.
