The Promise of Faith

Galatians 3:21–29 ESV
21 Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
Galatians 4:6–7 ESV
6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Israel became a people of the Law

The Law was God’s
++Rules
++Expectations
++Plan

It was not always this way

Galatians 3:19 ESV
19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.
The Law
++Was added because of transgression
++Was to lead to the promise
They began as
++The Children of Abraham
++The Children of a Promise

Abraham was no ordinary man

He was
++Called by God
++Chosen of God
++A man of Proven Faith
Romans 4:20–21 (ESV)
20 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,
21 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

We must be a people of faith

A people of faith
++Must believe God
++Receives the promise
Romans 4:16–17 KJV 1900
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, 17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
Faith is the vehicle
++To the promise
++To obtain grace
Galatians 3:21 KJV 1900
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

Paul answers the big question

It the law in conflict with the promises of God?

The simple answer
++Is no
++Is not so simple
Understanding of what is right or wrong is connected to rules.
Galatians 3:22 KJV 1900
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
The Promise of Faith
++Is connected to the scripture
++Declares all under sin
++Is given to all that believe
Romans 4:3 KJV 1900
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
There is a righteousness
++That preceded the law
++That came through a promise
Galatians 3:23–26 KJV 1900
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
It all started with Faith
++One man’s Faith
++One Peoples Faith
++Faith lost
Israels journey to Egypt
++Was the challenge of their faith
++Was a major shift in their trust

Isaac was warned about Egypt

Genesis 26:2–4 ESV
2 And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you. 3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father. 4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
Genesis 26:12 ESV
12 And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold. The Lord blessed him,
Genesis 26:16 ESV
16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”

He did it without Egypt.

Egypt was more than a place.

Egypt was
++A system
++An Ideology
++A new-placed confidence
It was never God’s plan
++To create a substitute for Him
++To shift Israel’s eye away from him
Isaiah 45:5 ESV
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me,
Israel- The People of Promise
++Had lost there Identity
++Had lost there Hope
++Had untapped potential
Galatians 3:27–29 KJV 1900
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

This is the promise of Faith

The walls are coming down

He deals with it all
++Racism Division
++Gender Division
++Economic Division

Jesus paid it all

Ephesians 2:14–17 KJV 1900
14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
Galatians 4:6–7 KJV 1900
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
We are no longer
++Slaves
++Under the law

The Promise of Faith declares

We are
++Heirs of God
++Joint Heirs wit Christ
Under the Law
++We were in a different position
++A different stage of Development
Galatians 4:1 KJV 1900
1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
It was already mine
