Have you ever been hungry?
Have you ever been hungry?
Im not talking about just eating because you like food bur rather eating because you are hungry. Your stomach starts to growl as if a bear is devouring a small child.
You know what I mean right?
This is what happened to the followers of Christ they were all sitting around listening to Jesus preach then they got hungry.
The only problem was that there was not a restaurant big enough to accommodate closes to 20,000 people. So Jesus performs a miracle with a kids lunch and feed thousands of people. They had seen the miracle and were touched by the miracle to the point they were about to make Jesus the King!
Jesus instantly retreated away by hisself and the disciples got in a boat and rode across the sea.
Now that we have the back story of what is happening lets begin in:
22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the far shore saw that the disciples had taken the only boat, and they realized Jesus had not gone with them. 23 Several boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the Lord had blessed the bread and the people had eaten. 24 So when the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went across to Capernaum to look for him. 25 They found him on the other side of the lake and asked, “Rabbi, when did you get here?”
26 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. 27 But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
28 They replied, “We want to perform God’s works, too. What should we do?”
29 Jesus told them, “This is the only work God wants from you: Believe in the one he has sent.”
30 They answered, “Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe in you. What can you do? 31 After all, our ancestors ate manna while they journeyed through the wilderness! The Scriptures say, ‘Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat.’”
1. They were seeking Jesus!
1. They were seeking Jesus!
The crowd was seeking after Jesus for personal gain rather than seeking him as being the Son of God.
Seeking after Jesus does not mean salvation. You can have all the knowledge about God and Christ you can have but never be committed to Him.
They were searching for him because lets be honest they got hungry again and came to the person who would feed them without having to pay.
Everybody loves free food!
Jesus quickly turns it around on them and tells them that they are not getting a free meal because the bread they ate yesterday did not keep them satisfied but that he is the bread of life in which you will never hunger again.
This a crucial statement that Jesus is making towards the crowd because he is claiming to be the Son of God and that eternal life comes through him alone!
34 “Sir,” they said, “give us that bread every day.”
35 Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36 But you haven’t believed in me even though you have seen me. 37 However, those the Father has given me will come to me, and I will never reject them. 38 For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will. 39 And this is the will of God, that I should not lose even one of all those he has given me, but that I should raise them up at the last day. 40 For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day.”
2.Jesus feeds those who are intentional
2.Jesus feeds those who are intentional
Seeking Jesus is not salvation but seeking Jesus is required for salvation. Salvation comes to those who believe that Jesus was the Son of God.
Whoever believes this then comes into the family of God. This is not just a God that we believe in to make us feel good but rather us realizing that we are believing on the true God who created all things. A God that is worthy of all praise because He alone created everything that worships him!
The promise of Jesus in this verse is that whoever comes to him will never be cast out from him. Meaning that once we believe on Christ and place our faith in Him then Jesus is never going to cast us away us from him.
This is where the stance once saved always saved comes into factor.
3. Salvation is Commitment to Christ
3. Salvation is Commitment to Christ
50 Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”
52 Then the people began arguing with each other about what he meant. “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” they asked.
53 So Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. 54 But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise that person at the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 I am the true bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will not die as your ancestors did (even though they ate the manna) but will live forever.”
59 He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.
Jesus’s final explanation of this encounter claims that he alone is salvation. He alone is the source of eternal life. He alone is God.
Jesus is claiming that the people must eat of Jesus’s flesh and drink of his blood to live forever!
This is a crazy statement because they at first thought of Jesus promoting cannibalism, and this was extremely offensive to Jewish people due to the mosaic law.
However cannibalism is not at all what Jesus was referring too but rather for us to be 100% committed to him!
Whenever you eat something you are commited to the food. Eating food requires that you bite it chew it swallow it and digest it. You are commited when you eat a steak.
This is the same way Jesus is describing him being the Bread of Life! We are to be committed completely to him and intentional about who Christ is for us!
WE have got to get out of the mindset that Jesus is just an addition to our lives but that Jesus is our lives!
The commitment to Jesus and Salvation only comes through His sacrifice and the reason he can offer eternal life.
The reason Jesus states that unless you eat of his flesh and drink of his blood you have no life is through his sacrifice that he gave for all of us!
Salvation comes at a price that we cannot attain without the love of Christ.
