Luke 4:1 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

Luke 4:35  But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further.

Intro

Our text that we are examining this morning is part of a trilogy found in all three of the synoptic Gospels

and you Bible Theologians know that the synoptic Gospels are comprised of Mathew Mark and Luke

For the most part they all share the same information

they share it from there perspective and from there own individual inspirations ,

so there are varying nuances to the same accounts in the life of Jesus

Mathew and Luke get their information from Mark who history suggest was an eyewitness of the events IN THE LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST

Mark if you will... is my kind of guy,.... his GOSPEL ACCOUNT is the shortest of all three OF THE SYNOPTIC Gospels.

Mark doesn’t spend a lot of time in context but he gets right to the conclusion. His is considered to be the action Gospel

AS PREVIOUSLY STATED, Mathew and Luke both gather a large portion of their material from Mark

Hence the reason why they are called the synoptic Gospels, BECAUSE THERE ALL REFLECTIVE OR SIMILAR IN NATURE WHEN IT COMES TO THE EVENTS OR THE ACCOUNTS THAT THEY RECORD FROM THE LIFE OF JESUS CHRIST.

And can I raise the relavent question this morning.... with the amount of word you’ve been sitting under over the years,

and that you take in on the daily basis , BECAUSE I TRUST YOU SIT WITH GOD ON THE DAILY BASIS

is there any similarity or any continuity between the word you take in and how you live

IS IT REFLECTIVE IN HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE

IF WE WERE TO STOP BY YOUR HOUSE AND ASK YOU SPOUSE OR ASK YOUR KIDS IS THERE ANY CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE WORD AND HOW THEY ARE TREATED BY YOU.....

AS JAMES SAYS .... are you a Doer of the word, or simply a hearer

I AIN’T GOT NOBODY

and so all three of the synoptic writers … RECORD THIS PARTICULAR EVENT , THAT TAKES PLACE in the early life of Jesus Christ found in our text this morning

and it is typically called the temptation of Jesus Christ

AND UMMM.... THERE IS CONTINUITY IN ALL THREE ACCOUNTS BECAUSE THEY ALL AGREE THAT THIS EVENT HAPPENS RIGHT BEFORE JESUS’S PUBLIC MINISTRY BEGINS

ITS SANDWICHED RIGHT BETWEEN THE TIME PERIOD RIGHT AFTER JESUS IS BAPTIZED AND RIGHT BEFORE HIS PUBLIC MINISTRY BEGINS

AND THIS EVENT FOUND ( Mark 1:12–13; Matt 4:1–11; Luke 4:1–13)

AND IT’S LABELED THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS CHRIST

I WISH I HAD TIME TO TELL YOU THAT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING OF SIGNIFIAGANCE FOR GOD,.... YOU CAN EXPECT TO BE FOUGHT

BUT THAT I MIGHT MANAGE OUR TIME WELL AND

EXEGETE THE TEXT AND

EXTRICATE SOME PRINCIPLES OUT OF THE TEXT

ALLOW ME TO HIGHLIGHT THE TENSION IN THE TEXT VERY QUICKLY

THE TENSION IN THE TEXT IS RIGHT THERE IN THE INTERIM IN VS. 1-2

WHEN JESUS HAS TO DEAL WITH GOD. CAN I SUGGEST THAT AT SOME POINT IN YOUR WALK WITH GOD YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO DEAL WITH GOD. AND RELETIVELY SPEAKING IT’S GOING TO CAUSE SOME TENSION.

BECAUSE IS IT JUST ME OR DOES GOD DO SOME THINGS THAT JUST FLAT OUT GOES AGAINST YOUR PREFERENCE

CAN I SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVEN’T TRULY WALKED WITH GOD IF HE HASN’T

IRRITATED YOU

URKED YOU

OR FLAT OUT GOTTEN ON YOUR NERVES

I KNOW THIS IS THE DEEP CROWD AND YOU LIVE IN THE THIRD HEAVEN AND EVERYTHING GOD DOES IS EXCELLENT IN ALL HIS WAYS

BUT ON MY BLOCK

EVERY NOW AND THEN GOD WILL DO SOMETHING

OR ASK ME TO DO SOMETHING

OR ALLOW SOMETHING TO HAPPEN THAT GETS ON MY NERVES

US......ISAIAH 43:22 But you did not call me, Jacob;

for you have become weary of me, Israel. (EXPOUND!!!)

LET ME APPROPRIATE IT BECAUSE JESUS IS NOT COMPLAINING IN THE TEXT THAT’S WHY HE’S OUR EXAMPLE

BUT IF THE TEXT GONNA LIVE , WE GOTTA PUT OURSELVES IN THE TEXT

CAUSE HERE IT IS JESUS JUST GOT INAGURATED IN CHAPTER (3 VS. 22b) AS THE SAVIOR OF THE WORLD AND....... THE SON OF GOD AND

AND HIS CELEBRATION IS IN THE WILDERNESS

BY HIMSELF

WITH NO FOOD

GOD....ISAIAH 43:24 But you have burdened me with your sins;

you have made me weary with your iniquities.

POINT # 1 JESUS HAS TO DEAL WITH GOD

JESUS HAS TO DEAL WITH GOD IN THE FACT THAT IT WAS GODS WILL FOR JESUS TO GO THROUGH THIS WILDERNESS ESPERIENCE

AND THE WILDERNESS IS A PLACE OF TESTING

AND HUMBLING

WHERE ALL DISTRACTIONS FROM GOD ARE WEEDED OUT

AIN’T NO WI FI IN THE WILDERNESS

FLESH IS SUPPRESSED IN THE WILDERNESS

NOW YOU HAVE TO APPRECIATE THE ORDER IN WHICH GOD ORDAINED THESE EVENTS IN JESUS’ LIFE

BECAUSE REMEMBER I TOLD YOU THAT HE JUST GOT BAPTIZED ACCORDING TO ....

The Baptism of Jesus

LUKE 3:21 Now it happened that when all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized, and while he* was praying, heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

AND SO HE GOES ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD FROM THE WATER TO THE WILDERNESS

THE WATER WHICH IS SYMBOLIC OF THE HOLY GHOST

AND THE WILDERNESS WHICH IS SYMBOLIC OF HUMBLING

WHICH SUGGEST TO ME THAT HE WAS ANOINTED TO GO THROUGH IT

I WISH I HAD TIME TO TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE ANOINTED TO GO THROUGH WHATEVER YOUR GOING THROUGH IN THIS SEASON

AND CAN I SUGGEST THAT .. SOMETIMES GOD WILL PACKAGE YOUR BLESSING IN A BURDEN ....

NOW BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU READ THESE TEXT THAT YOU STUDY IT IN UNISON ...

MATHEW 4:1 Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil?, 2 and after he* had fasted forty days and forty nights, then he was hungry

NOW IF WE READ THIS TEXT BLINDLY IN MATHEWS ACCOUNT AND THE WAY IT READS WE MIGHT MISINTERPRET WHAT GOD IS DOING AND WHAT GOD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR

THATS WHY IM SHARING IT FROM LUKES ACCOUNT

BECAUSE THE TEXT DOES SAY

THAT JESUS WAS LED BY THE SPIRIT TO THE WILDERNESS

AND THAT HE WAS TEMPTED IN THE WILDERNESS

BUT GOD DOESN’T LEAD HIM THERE TO TEMPT HIM

BUT TO TEST HIM .... ( IMMA SHOW YOU IN A MINUTE )

BECAUSE GOOD BIBLE STUDENT KNOWS THAT

JAMES 1:13- 15 SAYS....

 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death

GOD CAN’T BE TEMPTED

NEITHER DOES HE TEMPT ANYBODY

TEMPTATION of Jesus - AN EXAMINATION WITH THE EXPRESS PURPOSE OF PRODUCING OR PROVING A FAULT IN THE EXAMINEE

SO IN ALL ACTUALITY WHAT SEEMS LIKE JUST PURE TEMPTATION IS REALLY A TEST

THE DEVILS MOTIVES IN TO TRIP JESUS UP

TO MAKE HIM STUMBLE

TO MAKE HIM FALL

GOD ALLOWS IT TO PROVE WHATS DOWN ON THE INSIDE

POINT 3 YOU CAN DELIVER SOMEBODY

VS. 35

HE GOES TO GALILLE AND DELIVERS SOMEBODY
