John 17:6-19

John 17:6–19 ESV
6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
Notice this section the repeated word in this section - Glory -given
Jesus’ prayer to the Father centers on glory in a given people who will continue his mission, and so need both protection and unity in truth.
Jesus has prayed for glory for himself - glory he will take back up when he returns to his Father
Jesus is about to pray for Protection and unity for a given people
Specifically for his disciples whom will be left here when he leaves
Living our their gospel mission will bring both hardships and glory
Ex: Telling a couple our story of adoption in a gospel context- getting no response or only negative
How can someone here the gospel truth of our adoption in Christ to the God the Father and not be moved to worship?
They understood the story but they did not see the glory!
Oh that this morning God would give all of us the ability to see and hear and feel the glory of God’s love in this intercessory prayer our Lord prays for his people.
Prayer by our giving Lord for a given people
A given people are kept, protected and set apart with a clear mission.

Four Praises for a Given people (vv.6-8)

Praise that Jesus has revealed Himself to them (his disciples) - John 17:6a

John 17:6a (ESV)
6 “[I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world.] Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
manifested =to reveal -to make clear
1 John 1:1-4 - We need special revelation
1 John 1:1–4 ESV
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.
Psalm 22:22/ Heb 2:10-13 - Jesus is not ashamed to call us his brothers and sisters
“Your name” - Leon Morris writes, “In biblical times it was widely held that ‘the name’ in some way sums up the whole person.”
The name of the Father is revealed in the person of Jesus Christ
John 14:6-9
John 14:6–9 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Jesus is God with us
The name is the place of salvation
Creation and conscience is enough to reveal their is a God but it is not a pathway to salvation
To know the name of God is to possess a way of salvation; as Solomon wrote: (Prov. 18:10).
Proverbs 18:10 ESV
10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.

Praise that the disciples had been removed them from the world - John 17:6b

John 17:6b (ESV)
6 [“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, ] and they have kept your word.
This relates to the doctrine of sanctification, from the Latin word sanctus, for holy.
Two aspect to our sanctification: Christians are set apart from the world and called to holiness. (Consecration & transformation)
From the World
From the moment of our faith in Christ, we are set apart by God from the world; though still in it, we are no longer of it.
1 John 2:15–17
1 John 2:15–17 ESV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Sinclair Ferguson writes: “They belong to a new family in which sin is not ‘the order of the day.’
To the Son - You gave them to me!
To be holy is to be set apart and designated for God’s possession, pleasure and glory.
This is why David sang one thing he desired, “to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple” (Ps. 27:4)
God removed them - God brought them to the Son But:

Praise that they have Kept God’s Word given to Jesus- John 17:6c -8a

John 17:6c–8a (ESV)
6 [“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. ] 7 Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
What did Jesus mean when He said “they have kept Your word”?
v.6c - The word keep means “to lay hold of and secure.”
Jesus stated, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (14:15).
“Whoever does not love me does not keep my words” (14:24).
Jesus means not merely agreeing to his teaching, but embracing it in a lifestyle of obedience/following.
They had also embraced this essential truths:

Praise that they have believed that Jesus has been sent from the Father - John 17:8b

John 17:8b ESV
8 For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
But they had come to the deep conviction that Jesus was God’s messenger, that he had been sent by God and that all he taught was God’s truth.
Heb 11:6
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
The disciples had come to see Him as the Messiah sent from God, and they had put their faith in Him.
on the basis of those realities he offer his petitions to His Father on their behalf

Three Petitions for a Given People

Two realities about the petitions
This is intercessory prayer - v.9a
John Flavel, writes, “In this prayer he gives them a specimen, or sample, of that his glorious intercession work, which he was just then going to perform in heaven for them.”
The disciples represent/display Jesus’ glory on earth! - John 17:9-10
John 17:9–10 ESV
9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
One paraphrase of this verse says, “And all of them, since they are mine, belong to you; and you have given them back to me with everything else of yours, and so they are my glory!” (v. 10, TLB).
What a stunning reality! Faltering, failing, sinning human beings represent the glory of the holy Son of God!
Jesus is acknowledging that his disciples have a unique God given ability to bring him glory.
We are eternally connected to the Godhead in a way that magnifies His glory here right now!
The truth: To reflect Jesus glory brings hardship and hate by the world & demonic attack from the evil one.
Father,

keep them in your name - John 17:11; 12-14

John 17:11 (ESV)
11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. [ Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me,] that they may be one, even as we are one.
The praise - the have embraced the name!
But I am leaving them in this dark dangerous world
Ex: Like leaving your kids at college!
Jesus is asking his Father to protect his followers by using the same power that the Father had already given Jesus.
From what?
The dangers are real and urgent.
John 17:12 - Jesus has guarded them = to keep away - to keep watch - active statement of fact
John 17:12 ESV
12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
From the world (Hate and temptations)
First is the danger of the world: “I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world” (John 17:11).
Chose out of a God -hating world
Why are Afghans who helped America in such danger? They are still there!
John 17:14
John 17:14 ESV
14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
The prayer is that the Father would keep them secure in faith in the midst of a hostile world
Temptation of the world
“Keep them. Don’t release them. Don’t let them go. Hold on to them.”
v.12 - Not all of the disciples were kept—one of them was lost, the “son of destruction,” Judas.
Everyone seeks glory: We will seek glory either in our name or His
Judas understood the Words of Christ but he never saw the glory of Christ for that is a gift God’s amazing grace!
1 John 2:19a
1 John 2:19a ESV
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
John 17:11 - Keep them, So that they might be one - Kept to be a unified People =Church
The other side of the same coin - two dangers from the World and from:

Protect them from the Evil One (Wicked, worthless) - John 17:15-16

John 17:15–16 ESV
15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.
2 Thess 3:3
2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
3 But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
The evil one tempts (From Creation to Jesus)
He prays to the “Holy Father” to preserve his people from the domination of sin and the temptation from the Devil
Covid reminds me of Satan for it knows your weakness and hunt them out and attack you.
The disciples, aided by the Holy Spirit, will have to face the world’s temptations and the devil’s attacks
The evil one accuses
Zech 3:1 -2 The Lord rebukes the accuser
Zechariah 3:1–2 ESV
1 Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. 2 And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, O Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?”
Isolated Christians are vulnerable to the world, to sin, to Satan so Jesus prays that his people would stay together in the world.
The devil whispers his lies about you in your ear when you are at your weakest
The evil one seek to destroy you and your family so interceed for them!
Rom 8:33-34 who can lay an accusation to me with - Who are you to condemn - Who can separate me from Christ love.
Romans 8:33–34 ESV
33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
1 Peter 1:5 -
1 Peter 1:5 ESV
5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand” (10:28).
The Holy spirit will do everything Jesus was doing for his disciples answering Jesus prayer
Seal, preserve, protect, empower, comfort, correct = KEEP & PROTECT!

Sanctify them in Truth - John 17:17-19

John 17:17–19 ESV
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
Jesus prays for the Father to sanctify them (v. 17).
To “sanctify” is to set something aside for a special use—like fine china reserved for special occasions.
The disciples have been set aside for a special use. God chose them to fulfill a specific role in his plan.
For God
James Montgomery Boice tells of a cartoon that showed two pilgrims crossing to America on the Mayflower. One says to the other, “Religious freedom is my immediate goal, but my long-range plan is to go into real estate.
Jesus did not pray that the Father would give His disciples the safety of isolation, nor a healthy portfolio. nor an easy life. If he did Jesus prayers failed.
He prayed that God would set them apart in truth so they might be sent out as his representatives into a lost world with His Truth
In Truth
Everything the disciples did was in response to what God had done.
The received, believed and kept that which God gave them
The disciples kept the word, but who gave them the word? God. The disciples believed on Jesus, but who sent Jesus? God.
God not only did the work, but God used his word.
The way God brought them to faith was through his words
No one is saved without the truth of God’s Word
For Mission -v.18
In John’s Gospel, such ‘sanctification’ is always for mission.
The Greek verb for to send is apostello, the noun form of which gives us the word apostle, or “sent one.”
Set apart to be sent! v.18
They serve as his witnesses to the world. The first disciples are the foundation of the church.
Today’s Christians carry on the apostolic ministry of the New Testament, teaching the same doctrine that the apostles taught and empowered by the same Holy Spirit sent from Christ.

So What?

Are you set apart by God in truth for mission?
Do we realize we are set apart to enjoy and display his glory
Can you receive this, this morning: You are the glory of Christ on earth!
John 20:21
John 20:21 ESV
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
Your role is crucial to Christ’s saving mission in history: no one else can do the gospel work that Christ has set before your life.
Never allow yourself to think that God’s sovereignty makes your gospel witness optional or irrelevant.
Far from it: Christ has sent you into your family, your workplace, your neighborhood, and the lives of those with whom you are in contact.
Can you see see His glory? - Ex 33:18 Show me your glory!
1 Chron 16:8-36
