PETER DENIES CHRIST

JESUS ALWAYS HAS THE PERFECT PLAN

We read in scripture that many times, many People were plotting to take the life of Christ. To kill Him.

A. Have you ever been aware that in scripture there is always a “Place" “The place" In verses 1-2 Jesus went to the garden to pray. Judas knew this. Judas is setting up Jesus. John 18:1–2 (ESV)

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples across the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.” Jesus taught the importance of secret prayer, He went there often. Matthew 6:6 “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

Watch closely in today’s scripture how Jesus is always teaching His disciples.

B. Jesus uses all people, in every circumstance to Glorify the Father. v. 3. The Pharisees and chief priests sent a squad (600) of soldiers to capture Jesus. John 18:3 “So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons.”

C. The mighty Power of Jesus overcomes again.—vv. 4–6. The people who sought to capture Christ fell to the ground—became helpless. John 18:4–6 “4 Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” 5 They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. 6 When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.” This showed them that they could not take His life without His consent. Like today, Jesus is in control.

D. Now all of these events were prophesied. Judas had not yet betrayed Jesus. Lets go back to John 17:12 “2 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.”

So we know one will be lost, “the son of destruction or Judas Iscariot.

John 18:7–9 “7 So he asked them again, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” 9 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.”

E. Now Peter comes into the picture. He is all in for the Protection of Jesus (or He thinks) We read in John 18:10–11 “10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

So again, Jesus is saying “I gotta do what I gotta do.” It is the Fathers will.

II. THE PLAN WAS LAID OUT BEFORE US. WE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN TO JESUS.

Ever go to a great movie thriller for the second time? You know what is going to happen, you know that someone is getting ready to crash or get attacked, or like in JAWS, eaten! LOL. Yet we scream, we cover our eyes, tell whomever. DON’T LOOK

A. So the plan was carried our. The Arrest of Jesus took place. Christ was arrested. What did He do wrong? Nothing! John 18:12 “So the band of soldiers and their captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound him.”

B. Christ is taken to Annas, father-in-law of the high priest Caiaphas. He had said that it is good for Christ to die for all. His death paid the price for all man’s sins. John 18:13–14 “13 First they led him to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. 14 It was Caiaphas who had advised the Jews that it would be expedient that one man should die for the people.”

We read in John 11:49–51 “49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation.”

III. SO WATCH THE STORY UNFOLD NOW WITH PETER, Peter was at the wrong place at the right time but with the wrong people! Has that ever happened to any of you? You have good intentions, great plans, awesome “MEAN WELL” attitude but the wrong people seem to steer you away from your heart.

A little about Simon Peter, he was the most prominent of the twelve apostles. Impressive!!! After Jesus’ death, he became the primary spokesman for the early Christians in Jerusalem and was the apostle primarily responsible for evangelizing the Jews. Peter was the first disciple to confess his belief in Jesus as the Messiah and Peter was known to be bold and impulsive. HMMMMM I like that!

A. A sneaky Following Jesus after His arrest. The “other disciple” was perhaps John, since he was always close to Christ. He was known as the “bosom disciple.”John 18:15 “Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest,’

Let’s look at where Jesus let’s Peter know, you are not with me.....YET John 13:36–38 “36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

So Jesus is predicting the “denial” that will come from Peter. All the others will scatter except two. Any of us here today ever deny that we know Jesus? Any here today listen to dirty jokes so we can be apart of the crowd? Any here this morning who has denied Jesus and seconds later cry because we know we have betrayed our Jesus?

John 18:17 “The servant girl at the door said to Peter, “You also are not one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”

John 18:22–27 “22 When he had said these things, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, “Is that how you answer the high priest?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If what I said is wrong, bear witness about the wrong; but if what I said is right, why do you strike me?” 24 Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. 25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26 One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27 Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed.”

So Jesus knows that we are weak, that at times we are not “all in.” Does He continue to love us? Of course He does. Peter has denied Jesus, even knowing Him at all. 3 TIMES!. In a very short amount of time. I’m sure Peter was or felt alone, scared, prideful and on his own.

Luke 22:31–34 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 34 Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Did you pick up on that church? V 32 says: “but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. OK Peter had failed miserably. Just like we do, Peter Denied Jesus 3 times in a matter of hours. Just like we have, How many times have we failed Jesus this week? Now the bright side, the positive side. And when you have turned again Jesus says, strengthen your brothers-or begin your work again.

Jesus is letting Peter know, you will return to me, you will turn around and once again be disciple that I will build my church on.

John 21:15–17 “15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”

In the NT, Peter stands as a reassuring example of Christ’s forgiving grace for those who know they’ve failed him---and of the way Christ can graciously restore and use such people for His glory, in spite of our failings.

AMEN
