Genesis (Book of Moses)

Genesis ends almost 300 years before Moses (the writer) was born. Genesis was written after the exodus from Egypt. Genesis starts in Mesopotamia, then goes to the promised land, then ends in Egypt.
Creation: 7 days, Adam and Eve
Fall: Murder Cane and Able
Flood: Noah, punishment and deliverance; Noahic covenant
Dispersion: Tower of Babel, go and multiply - they stayed, disobeyed
Abraham; Promised land covenant, Rejection of Hagar (servant) and Ishmael (son of the servant)
Isaac
Jacob - deceiver who stole the blessing from his brother Esau, renamed Israel (wrestles with God)
Joseph - Sold into slavery, Journey to Egypt

Exodus (Book of Moses)

the sequel to Genesis; leaving Egypt
at the time of the Exodus Egypt was in one of it’s strongest periods of history
Moses born 1525 BC
Amenhotep II was the pharoah of the Exodus
To trace the rapid growth of Jacob’s descendants from Egypt to the promised land
Oppression under pharaoh

Exodus 19 called Israel to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation

Leviticus (Book of Moses)

“commandments that the Lord gave to Moses”
How to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation
They grew up in Egypt and needed correction on how to worship God
establishment of the priesthood, sacrifices, and tabernacle (God with man)
God, as king, lived in the Tabernacle and instituted His law.
Theme: God is holy and the will of God is Israel’s holiness.
God’s holiness, mankind’s sinfulness, sacrifice, and God’s presence
You were made in the image of God, now be as one made in the image of God
The passover lamb (1 Cor. 5:7)

Numbers (Book of Moses)

Israel in the wilderness
written in the final year of Moses’ life. Ends with Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan river
“wilderness” used 48 times
The entire book of numbers only refers to the second and fortieth years of wandering. The 37 years in between were just wasted.
Numbers 14:the people refuse to enter the land of Canaan because of Giants. Caleb and Joshua.
“Anger of the Lord” 7 times
“keep His promise” 5 times
Balaam - God used the false prophet to bless Israel
First generation: Obedience, disobedience, complaining, rebellion, rebellion, complaining, the punishment.
Second generation: Prepare for conquest of the land

Deuteronomy (Book of Moses)

Moses writing at the end of his life to Israel’s next generation
Commissioning Joshua as the new leader
Moses calls the next generation to trust God and be obedient to his covenant. He reminded them of the last generation’s disobedience which brought devastation and also God’s faithfulness.
Moses calls the people to take the land
The Lord is the only God, He is jealous, faithful, loving, merciful, and angered by sin.
Moses repeats more than 250 times, “the Lord your God” to Isreal
obey, fear, love, and serve God by walking in his ways

Ch.32 basically the rest of the old testament repeating over and over.
Revelation 15:3 - “They held harps given them by God and sang the song of God’s servant Moses and of the Lamb” Matthew 7:24 my words are the rock! I am the rock!
