A BETTER PRIESTHOOD
A BETTER PRIESTHOOD
Now if perfection came through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the law), what further need was there for another priest to appear, said to be according to the order of Melchizedek and not according to the order of Aaron?
For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must be a change of law as well.
For the one these things are spoken about belonged to a different tribe. No one from it has served at the altar.
Now it is evident that our Lord came from Judah, and Moses said nothing about that tribe concerning priests.
And this becomes clearer if another priest like Melchizedek appears,
who did not become a priest based on a legal regulation about physical descent but based on the power of an indestructible life.
For it has been testified: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
So the previous command is annulled because it was weak and unprofitable
(for the law perfected nothing), but a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
None of this happened without an oath. For others became priests without an oath,
but he became a priest with an oath made by the one who said to him: The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever.”
Because of this oath, Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant.
Main Idea: The priesthood of Jesus is better than any other.

Key Question: What gives you hope?
Key Question: What gives you hope?
1. Jesus is better than the law (v. 11-19)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus,
because the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering,
in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
2. Jesus is a better hope. (v. 19-21)

(for the law perfected nothing), but a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.
None of this happened without an oath. For others became priests without an oath,
but he became a priest with an oath made by the one who said to him: The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever.”
so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to seize the hope set before us.
God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
We have also obtained access through him by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
3. Jesus is a better covenant. (v. 22)
3. Jesus is a better covenant. (v. 22)
Because of this oath, Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant.
But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree he is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been established on better promises.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion for a second one.
Dear Second Baptist Family, the pastoral staff and deacons regretfully must ask for our members presence next Sunday for a special called business meeting in relation to the removal of a Second Baptist church member. The member has exhibited a pattern of ungodly, non-Christlike behavior. We are praying for reconciliation and restoration. We ask that you join us in praying and join us next week at 5:00 PM here in the sanctuary for a membership only meeting related to this matter. Thank you.
