Sermon on our expectations of God as reflected in the expectations of the three characters in Mark 5:21-43

Notes
Transcript
All of these people that interacted with Jesus undoubtedly had certain expectations of Jesus.
And yet, Jesus actually met none of their expectations.
And their expectations are shockingly similar to our expectations.
So, here are three expectations that these characters (and we) have of God.

God has to act on my timeline

Jairus expects Jesus to come right away when he asks Him.
Instead, He waits and interacts with this woman.
Jesus forces a powerful, God-fearing man to wait for this unclean, dirty woman
And, in that time, his daughter died!
This was malpractice for the Great Physician! It was the biggest mistake that Jesus made!
Everyone told Jesus to forget about healing her, because He was too late.
Jesus didn’t work in the timeline that they booked for Him, and He blew it.
But God acted on His time, not ours.

Jesus can fix me without a relationship with me

The woman wanted a touch and run
She thought that she could get what she wanted without talking to anyone or having any acknowledgement.
She’s ashamed, she’s causing a huge scandal by what she’s doing.
Instead, Jesus stops the whole proceeding (cancelling the ambulances and everything) to call her out.
This wasn’t done out of anger, but out of love!
She had to acknowledge her need for a Saviour, and she received something so much greater than she could have ever hoped for… love and acceptance from a God who everyone had told her for 12 years hated her.

Jesus won’t change who I am.

The woman
The woman was a dirty, unclean, shunned woman. She was avoided, and had probably been ignored or looked at with disgust for 12 years
In the matter of a few minutes, she is healed, called a daughter by God, and is immortalized in Scripture. Jesus gave her a new identity.
The girl
She was a rich guy’s daughter who was sick. All she wanted from this exchange was to be healed of a disease (which Jesus did all of the time!)
She ends up being one of the two people Jesus raised from the dead. She could never just be Jairus’ daughter again. And we will always remember the little girl who died, and all Jesus had to do was wake her up.
Conclusion
We are all guilty of these and other expectations. But God shatters every single one of them. He broke our expectations so much that He was willing to die for you on a cross. Don’t have a god that just meets your expectations.

Honestly write down your expectations of God. Reflect on how God has destroyed your previous expectations.
