10 For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.

Big Idea: Repentance Leads to Renewal

What the passage contributes to our knowledge of God is this passage of scripture is that in his prayer for repentance David appealed to God’s love and compassion as he petitioned the Lord to forgive him by grace and cleanse him from sin. (51:1a.) God’s attributes of unfailing love (ḥeseḏ) for His servant and His compassion for the helpless, were the basis for David’s appeal for mercy. Even the verb have mercy was a prayer for God to act in accord with His nature. It is also a recognition that David did not deserve forgiveness. God’s forgiveness is by His grace alone.
