A Study on the Book of Romans
text
Romans 1:1
As we begin our study of the book of Romans, there are many things that we gain just in these first few verses.
1, the Author - Paul
2. His Spiritual occupation - A Servant of Jesus Christ
A, Paul in the beginning of his letter to the Romans calls himself a servant. The word here means slave or bondman.
A slave is normally driven to do things that he does not want to do as we see in cases of previous history.
Let us be extremely cautious that we realize the seriousness of Paul's opening statement. “Paul a servant” I fear that since we in America know little to nothing of slavery that we read these words with them having absolutely no concern or impact upon us.
Paul is not driven by an angry Master with whip or threat of punishment, but with Love.
Paul is a Man whose will was swallowed up in the will of his master.
Note
We would do well to take our will for our lives and sacrifice it upon the alter of surrender to be consumed in the flames of obedience toward God.
2. His reference to His apostleship - Called to be an apostle
4 His separation unto the Gospel -set apart to spread or share the gospel.
We see the Promise of the Gospel in a reference Paul makes to the Old Testament. Behold a young virgin shall conceive...
Why do we do what we do is it the Love of Christ that causes us to want to serve Him?
Secondly, we see He not only calls himself a servant but that he identifies openly and unashamedly with Jesus Christ.
Paul is not only known for his boldness to preach the gospel. But as we see in Romans 1:16 His boldness and unashamed zeal for the gospel of Christ.
I believe that Paul would have sung the song I surrender all and meant it!
I believe just the real meditation on verse one should cause us to want a closer walk with Jesus as the song writer Wrote
SO, WHAT IS IN IT FOR US TODAY?
I hope I conclude the sermon this morning that we can ask ourselves two simple questions.
Do I genuinely love the gospel? Enough to share it with all those with which I come in contact each day?
Can I say that I am a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ?
