Scripture

Matthew 7:21 NRSV
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
Matthew 7:24–27 NRSV
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!”
Colossians 3:12–17 NRSV
12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. 17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Clothing We Wear

You two are dressed up as part of this ceremony
Probably these are outfits that you put a lot of time and effort picking out
Day-to-day you might not put nearly the amount of time picking out what you put one

These are the clothes that you will wear in your wedding, but I ask you what are the clothes that you will wear in your marriage?

We wear clothes for other people

To let them know of a sense of occasion
We communicate with other that they are important and that the interaction is valuable to us by what we choose to put on
you might see a doctor in white lab coat and you to trust them
You might dress up for a job interview
You might have to wear any number of uniforms throughout your life
The point is that we dress up to communicate a sense of importance to the other person
We dress up to honor the other person to say that this interaction is important to me

you probably received all sorts of feedback about what you put on today

So now let me offer once again the words of our scripture passage today that let you know what to put on in your marriage together
Colossians 3:12–14 NRSV
12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
In the moments of joy in your marriage to come, and in the moments of lament that are sure to be there as well, remember what you are putting on
Remember in the difficult moments the choice that you made on this day that even when times get tough that you didn’t promise that you wouldn’t be mad. You didn’t promise that wouldn’t be hardships, but you did promise some of the things that you would put on.

Transition to Vows

Those promises are made through the sharing of your vows to one another before God and before all those that love you and support you and have gathered you here today.
