Galatians 4 Cont.
08-21-2021
Well was anyone kicked in the mouth this last week?
Might I encouraged you to remain persistent and consistent
When you get the news that is a kick in the mouth, when you are so overwhelmed with everything going on right now
I just want to encourage you to run to Jesus
To remain persistent and consistent
This morning we are going to finish Galatians 4
If you will recall a few weeks ago we got to Galatians 4:11
And remember Paul was telling the churches in Galatia that they are heirs with Christ
That because of being heirs with Christ they are free from the law
Then Paul asks them how they could fall back into the being under the law again
11 I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain.
Paul is heart broken over the churches in Galatia
Paul is so invested in their growth in Christ
12 I beg of you, brethren, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You have done me no wrong; 13 but you know that it was because of a bodily illness that I preached the gospel to you the first time; 14 and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition you did not despise or loathe, but you received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself.
Paul preached the Gospel to the churches in Galatia
Because of some sickness
It doesn’t say what the sickness was and there are some super smart people who have come up with a few different answers
That is not the point
Paul preaches the Gospel
They listened to the Gospel
They received the Gospel and were obedient to receiving the Gospel
Something happens
Maybe they had been kicked in the mouth
15 Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
Where did their sense of blessing go
Where did their first love Go
Church the same question must be ask of ourselves
Where did our sense of blessing go
Why have we grown so cold
Where has our first love gone
16 So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They eagerly seek you, not commendably, but they wish to shut you out so that you will seek them. 18 But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner, and not only when I am present with you.
Are they mad at Paul because is sharing the truth with them
Paul is sharing the Truth of the Gospel
Paul doesn’t want them to only be following the truth of the Gospel when Paul is around but even when he is not
But none the less Paul continues to share the Gospel
Paul doesn’t hold back with the churches in Galatia
That they have received freedom from the Law
They no longer need to be slaves to the law
So why would you run back to the law
Much like today church
We know we need to be reading our Bibles
We know we need to be praying
We know we need to be sharing the Gospel
They why don’t we
If Paul wrote a letter to the church at Maranatha those may be some of the questions and truth he shares
19 My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you— 20 but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
Paul is not ready to just write them off
Paul desires to work with them to help them grow
Paul wishes to be with them so he can continue to disciple them
This is how most parents feel about their kids
I can tell you this is how I feel about my kids
How i desire them to grow in their walk with Christ
This is also how most pastors feel about their flocks
Church let me be clear
This is how I feel about you all
I desire you all to grow in Christ
21 Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. 23 But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.
Paul once again is going to share with them that they are free from the Law
They no longer need to be slaves to the law
To a list a rules created by men, but they are under Grace because of what Jesus did on the cross
Paul is going to show them that because of Jesus on the cross they are children of the promise and not the law
24 This is allegorically speaking, for these women are two covenants: one proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. 25 Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free; she is our mother. 27 For it is written, “Rejoice, barren woman who does not bear; Break forth and shout, you who are not in labor; For more numerous are the children of the desolate Than of the one who has a husband.” 28 And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise.
The 2 women represent 2 covenants
Ishmael the son of Hagar is the covenant of who are to be slaves
If you will recall Ishmael was born out of what the person can do
Remember the story
God had promised Abraham and Sarah a child and nothing was happeneing so Sarah tells her husband Abraham to have a child with her maid Hagar
It was a child out of what they can do
Issac is a child out of a promise from God
Issac is a child of God out of the power of God
Church the law was originally from God to show them they need Christ
But men got ahold of it and added to it and it became what only men can do
Because of what Christ did on the cross, you and I just like the churches in Galatia are children of the promise
29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
We are children of the Promise because of Christ
Because of the personal relationship with Christ that you have if indeed you have that then you are a child of the promise and a co heir with Christ
29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now also. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, For the son of the bondwoman shall not be an heir with the son of the free woman.”
This is about Jesus
Jesus was born and persecuted
And because of that we are free from the law
Paul wants the churches in Galatia to understand that Christ has set them free and because of that they no longer need to be slaves to the law
31 So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman. 1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.
What a great way to wrap this up
Because of Jesus who was born and was persecuted and was killed on the cross
We are no longer children of the bond woman but we are children of the free woman
And because we are free in Christ we should not use that freedom to fall into another trap of slavery
Because of that freedom that you have don’t use that freedom to become a slave to something else
Paul is sharing again and again with the churches in Galatia that they no longer need to be slaves to the Law
They can now have a personal relationship with God because of Jesus’s death on the cross
BLANK
See Jesus’s death on the cross created a bridge to get to God
There was a divide because of sin
Jesus’s death on the cross bridged that gap
And the Bible is clear that if you and I repent of our sin and trust in Jesus then we can cross that bridge into fellowship with God because of Jesus
CLOSING
This morning as the band comes up
Maybe that is you this morning
Maybe you hav never repented of sin and trusted in Jesus I would invite you to the front this morning to do just that
To walk out of darkness and death and into a new relationship with God to walk into life this morning
Or maybe you are here this morning and already have a personal relationship with Jesus and simply need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar
The altar is open
