Opening:
Good-morning Kids! I am so glad that you came to worship Jesus together with us. I am so happy you are here. Last Sunday I taught the adults that Jesus welcomed all the children with open arms and blessed them. I want to bless you today. Today we are going to learn about the Bible. The Bible is God’s Word.
Illustration:
But what does that mean? God’s Word? Someone’s word is something they have spoken. When I say something, I am giving you my words. That makes sense right? If I were to tell you about my life, it would be me giving you my word about my life. I could tell you that I was born in Spearfish. I grew up there. My mom was my school teacher. I married miss Katharine in 2019 and now we are going to have a baby soon. That is my word about my life.
So when we say the Bible is God’s Word it means that it is what God has spoken. God revealed the truth and it was written down by various people. The prophets wrote down what God spoke. And If God has spoken, that is pretty important. When your parents tell you something, that is really important. You need to listen to them. But when God speaks, that is really really important.
Introduction of 2 Timothy 3:14-17.
This is what the apostle Paul tells his student Timothy. Paul wrote Timothy a letter and he says this.
2 Timothy 3:14-17 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
Paul tells Timothy to continue in what he has learned from his childhood. But what was it that Timothy learned? He learned from the Bible. Ever since Timothy was a little kid like you guys, Timothy was taught from the Bible. This is a good thing because Paul says that the Bible is able to make someone wise for salvation.
Paul also says that the Bible is breathed out by God. That’s a really important phrase. This means that the Bible is so important that it holds the breath of God. It is the only book that holds the breath of God. That means that the Bible is just like if God spoke it out loud. When we read the Bible it is just like God was speaking directly to us. This is why Paul says that the Bible is good for teaching, for correcting, for training in righteousness. The Bible is what makes us complete and ready for every good work. We need to listen to the Bible because it is just as if God were speaking to us directly. The Bible is the Word of God.
Transition:
And this important because life is really confusing sometimes.
Introduction of Romans 15:4.
Paul wrote a letter to the church in Rome. In Romans 15:4 Paul says this, 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
See, the Bible was written for our instruction. This means we can learn from it. We have to learn from it. God gave it to us for instruction. This is so helpful. Life is really confusing, but God gave us His word and we can trust it. We can learn from what God has said to us. This encourages us. This means that when life is confusing and we feel lost, we can go to the Bible and learn from God. We can be encouraged from the Word of God. God is not surprised by anything. He knows everything and everything is part of His plan. This means that the Bible has everything we need to know.
This gives us hope! God, who knows everything has given us His Word. He gave it to us to encourage us and give us hope when we are sad and confused. We can go to the Bible and learn what God has told us.
Transition:
When we learn from God’s Word something really important happens. We are sanctified.
Introduction of John 17:17.
Right before He went to the cross, Jesus prayed a prayer. He prayed for His disciples and even for you and I. This prayer is called the High Priestly Prayer. In this Prayer, Jesus asks God the Father to do this. John 17:17 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
Sanctification is becoming more like Jesus. It means that God makes Christians better throughout our lives. So Jesus says that this happens through God’s Word, the Bible. When we learn from the Bible, God makes us more and more like Jesus. We learn what God loves and what God hates. We learn how to love God better. We learn how to love each other better. We learn more and more about who Jesus is. We learn how to worship Him how He wants. As this happens we obey Him more and more. We do what He wants because we love Him.
Closing:
This is really important. We can trust the Bible because it is God’s Word. God has spoken to us through the Bible. This means we need to pay close attention to what God has said. We can and should learn from it. We need to learn about God from what God has said. He has told us all we need to know about Him and about life in His Word. When we learn from the Bible, we become better Christians. God has spoken to us and we can trust what He said.
Let’s pray.
