Intro: What Does It Mean to Be a Son?

John 19:1–7 CSB
1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe. 3 And they kept coming up to him and saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” and were slapping his face. 4 Pilate went outside again and said to them, “Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.” 5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the temple servants saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.” 7 “We have a law,” the Jews replied to him, “and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”

Point #1: The Religious Leaders Wanted to Crucify Jesus For Blasphemy; Because Jesus Had Made Himself Equal with God by Calling Himself God’s Son!

In the same way that a son is like a father, a representation of the father, the religious leaders say Jesus is trying to make himself equal with God by calling God His Father!
This is only a problem if Jesus is not God!
I have heard that Muslims hold that Jesus is a prophet.
I have heard that Muslims call Jesus a great teacher.
Do you know what Jesus taught?
That He is the One and Only Son of God… (John 3:16)
That He is the One and Only Son of God… (John 10)
At this point Pilate knows what is in the heart of the religious leaders...
Matthew 27:18 says, “For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.
John 12:19 “Then the Pharisees said to one another, “You see? You’ve accomplished nothing. Look, the world had gone after him.
3. The soldiers put a robe and a crown of thorns on Jesus...
a. The soldiers were coming up to Jesus and saying “Hail, King of the Jews” and slapped him in the face...
4. Pilate brings him back out hoping the crowd would have mercy on Jesus and let him release Jesus...
a. The crowd at this point shouts, “Crucify, Crucify!”
i. Pilate says, take him and crucify him yourself...
ii. The Jews respond that under Roman Law they haven’t the right...

John 19:8–16 CSB
8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever. 9 He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?” 11 “You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!” 13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic, Gabbatha). 14 It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!” 15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?” “We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered. 16 Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away.

Point #2: Israel Rejects Jesus As Their King!

Is America currently a Christian Nation?
Not currently...
Was American a Christian Nation in the 1970’s?
That was the America is grew up in...
But they are no longer the moral compass for the nation...
This is the exact same dynamic that is present in Israel at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion...
Most of the religious leaders had forsaken God…
Jesus tells us about them in Matthew 23...
Matthew 23:1–7 CSB
1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses. 3 Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach. 4 They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 They do everything to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels. 6 They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues, 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
Matthew 23:13–15 CSB
13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in. 15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as you are!
Matthew 23:27–28 CSB
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity. 28 In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
But some believed and followed...
I think of Joseph of Arimathea, I think of Nicodemus...
2. When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever.
a. 9 He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?”
b. 11 “You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him, “if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”
i. 12 From that moment Pilate kept trying[b] to release him. But the Jews shouted, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”
ii. 13 When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement (but in Aramaic,[c] Gabbatha). 14 It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon.[d] Then he told the Jews, “Here is your king!”
iii. 15 They shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!”
a. Pilate said to them, “Should I crucify your king?”
i. “We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.
ii. 16 Then he handed him over to be crucified.

Continuing in John 19:16b

John 19:16–24 CSB
16 Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. 17 Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The king of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the king of the Jews.’ ” 22 Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.” 23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. 24 So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did.

Point #3: Jesus Is Handed Over to Be Crucified...

Theologians call this the sacrificial atonement...
Jesus gave himself for the sins mankind to redeem them...
Jesus is the fulfillment of the sacrificial system…He was the perfect sacrifice to reverse the fall of man...
John 1:29 CSB
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
1 John 2:1–2 CSB
1 My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one. 2 He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
2 Corinthians 5:21 CSB
21 He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Hebrews 10:8–10 CSB
8 After he says above, You did not desire or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law), 9 he then says, See, I have come to do your will. He takes away the first to establish the second. 10 By this will, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.

Continuing in John 19:25

John 19:25–30 CSB
25 Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. 28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.

Point #4: Jesus Accomplishes the Mission That His Heavenly Father Had Given Him!

He give the Apostle John charge to take care of his mother, Mary.
Jesus knew that everything was now finished that scripture might be fulfilled, He says, “I’m thirsty.”
Jesus fulfill 333 aprox. Messianic prophesies about his coming, his life, his death and his resurrection!
They give him a drink of sour wine
Jesus then gives up his spirit…no one took it from him!
John 10:17–18 CSB
17 This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life so that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”
He did this for us, because he loves us!

Continuing in John 19:31

John 19:31–41 CSB
31 Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him. 33 When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. 35 He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth. 36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the one they pierced. 38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away. 39 Nicodemus (who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. 40 They took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. 41 There was a garden in the place where he was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it.

Point #5: Jesus’ Body is Pierced to Assure Death, Removed From the Cross, Then Put in a Tomb!
