Transitional Statement: Have you ever been caught lying?
WE:

Had a big test that day.
Lied about having a flat tire and arrived at school around 10:00am
Teacher sat them down in the classroom separate from one another
One question (Pass or fail) “Which tire?”
Lying or being lied to is such a big deal to people.
Its a violation of trust ..... faith in a person!
In counseling couples who have lied to one another.
You have violated one another’s trust.
It take time to regain than back.
Lying is so revealing about a person ....
It reveals ones integrity!
Transitional Statement: This must be why Paul separates this vice out from the rest.
GOD:
Turn to Colossians 3:1–10 (ESV)
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming.
7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them.
8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.
9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.

Personal Attitudes (From the Tongue)
Paul takes one Vice and separates it from the others. (LYING) (9) Do not lie to one another....
Why would Paul do this?
What separates this vice from the ones found in (8)?
The word “lie” (Pseudomia) deceive by Lying
Motive!!!!
This is still a sin of the tongue but with a desire to deceive and get ones way.
Definition of the word Lie in the Webster dictionary .....
To make an untrue statement with intent to deceive.
To create a false or misleading impression.
Lying is a big deal to God ....
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
False Witness: lie

Jesus tells us in John 8:44 (ESV)
44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
The Devil is the “Father of Lies”
We need to see and understand this!
Father?
In order to be a father their must be a mother “MUST BE TWO.”
In order for the enemy to produce (father) a lie he needs a partner.
When we partake in lying we are actually coming into relationship with the enemy / being impregnated with this lie from the enemy
..... and when this lie is released ..... you are giving birth to it.
This is why we read there is such a harsh punishment for liars ......
Revelation 21:8 (ESV)
8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
“Lake of Fire”
This word is the same root word we find in Col 3:9
The word here in Rev. means “Corruptor of the truth of God.”
God’s People are to be govern by “Honesty & Truth”
John 14:6 (ESV) 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
This is who Christ is .... TRUTH
This is what should pour from us as believers.

I know some of you might be thinking .....
.... There are good times to lie?
Nazi Germany ......
To surprise someone in a good way .....
Some of you might be thinking .....
There is cases where people lied in the Bible!
Remember what the definition of Lying is .....
Desire to deceive in order to get ones way!
Too corrupt the truth of God!
Paul is pointing this church to the understanding that Lying to one another is what is so detrimental.
To the fabric of unity and “One Accord!”
DON’T DO IT!
Transition Statement: How many of you feel you struggle with Lying?
WE:
Remember what this is ..... Coming into a relationship with the Father of Lies!
What God desires for us is to come into a relationship with HIM .... Giving birth to TRUTH!
The truth will set you free.
John 8:31–32 (ESV) 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
How many of you would like to be set free today?
