KISS
Keep
It
Simple
Stupid
we have all heard the acronym, and tonight I am not calling anyone stupid - I call myself that often… but the true meaning of this is not to make things too complicated...
The complicated is hard to accomplish and harder to replicate...
When I look at the Savior - I see perfection - i’m out...
When I look at Solomon - I look at a man that I have no hope of living up to…
intelligent, wise, discerning, rich
When I look at a SINNER -
a normal, everyday person - I feel like there might be some hope - but don’t make it out of reach...
Solomon has put it all on the bottom shelf -
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
1. Fear God
2. Keep His Commandments
… for this is the whole duty of man...
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Will of God
this scary, mystical thing - that always seems out of reach - or fuzzy- hard to find as though its a mystery that God doesn’t want us to ever find...
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Fear God
reverence, fear
a feeling of profound respect for someone or something, often a diety.
law of first mention - sense
Gen. 20 - Abraham and Sarah stayed in Gerar…
Abraham told Sarah to tell people they were bro & sis.
Abimelech saw Sarah - & took her to be his wife
3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.
9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing?
11 And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake.
Fear - Reverence, respect...
Abraham did not believe that they had a reverence and respect for God, which controls and tempers behavior
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
The fear of God
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: A good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endureth for ever.
Keep His Commandments
Solomon, in this book of Ecclesiastes was seeking real purpose and meaning of life.
It is the old man who really looks back with experience and is able to make real assessments of what was really important -
Solomon, with all his wisdom, wealth and understanding missed the boat for a lot of his life...
3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
He sought the pleasures of life
He satisfied himself with the pursuits of his heart
He finally solidified the purpose of man’s existence - after wasting many years...
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Fear God
Keep His Commandments
The Lord Jesus put it clearer than Solomon ever could...
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Love God -
with all thy:
Heart, soul, mind and strength
Love Others - thy neighbor
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Tonight we have observed the Lord’s supper - remembering all that the Lord has done for us.
We in turn need to live the life He has given us - for Him…
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
