Intro - Trust and weakness…kids jumping into the pool when they can’t swim… ultimate sign of trust is based upon you knowing you cannot do it on your own.
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked. 9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place— the Most High, who is my refuge— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot. 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
1. Your Position in the Lord. (vs. 1-2)
Dwells - Remains sitting
Shelter - Hiding place of protection
JH Camp Night game, grove of trees.
My God in whom I trust.
GOSPEL - position is gained by grace alone through faith alone.
when we have that position we have benefits and one of those benefits is protection.
2. Your Protection from the Lord. (vs. 3-13)
All unseen (vs. 3-4)
All occasions (vs. 5-6)
All judgement (vs. 7-10)
All threats (vs. 11-13)
Complete protection from God. There is no threat in this world that He is not sovereign over. So why do Christians suffer then?
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Firey Furnace from Daniel
16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17 If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”
Trusting in God’s protection does not mean troubles do not come your way, it means that when they do you know He holds you fast.
We see that this is not a wishful hope but a solid promise.
3. Your Promises from the Lord. (vs. 14-16)
God speaking...
14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.
he holds fast to me in love. - Genuine love
knows my name - Knows Gods Character
This seems to imply that trust and protection is founded upon our strength and love. What about when we waiver?
15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. 19 We love because he first loved us.
The only way we can hold fast to him is because He has us already.
