Incompatible
Incompatible
With love bestowed comes love empowered in us so not to sin. The child of God and sin are incompatible. That is what we are talking about tonight.
I think a quick reminder of who we are!
1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
We are called children of God and that is who we are (1Jn3:1)!
2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is.
As children of God we have the promise of our transformation upon His return that we will be like Him (1Jn3:2).
3 And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.
John went on to tells us what we should do as a child of God, purify oneself (1Jn1:3).
Here is a story I read.
(Insert group-of-teenagers picture here)
A group of teenagers were enjoying a party, and someone suggested that they go to a certain restaurant for a good time. “I’d rather you took me home,: Jan said to her date. “My parents don’t approve of that place.” “Afraid your father will hurt you?” one of the girls asked sarcastically. “No,” Jan replied, “I’m not afraid my father will hurt me, but I am afraid I might hurt him.”
Do you think she got the concept that John had put across in (vv.1-3)? that as a child of God who has this hope is now responsible to purify self, and live that way?
Sin and the godly man, the child of God are incompatible!
Sin is incompatible with the law of God (vv.4-6)
Sin is incompatible with the works of Christ (v.7)
Sin is incompatible with the destroyed works of devil (vv.8-10)
I would like you to do something we do not normally do, some other churches do this, but I ask if you are willing, able, please stand for the reading of God’s word!
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that He appeared in order to take away sins; and in Him there is no sin.
6 No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him. 7 Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;
8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.
(Offer a quick prayer here)
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
May we glean a few little things before moving on.
Scan the verses, how many times do you see the word “sin”?
In the NASB it is 8 times.
Having such a preponderance of the word “sin, sins, sinned” used, what do you think the subject matter is that John is dealing with?
Look at(v.7) who is John writing to, and what is the purpose of this writing?
Little children and so no one deceives you!
OK, just one more to look at
In (v.10) John states the obvious about the children of God and the children of the devil, what is the obvious?
The one who does not practice righteousness is of the devil, as is the one who does not love his brother.
(Transition) ah, now may we move on to the how the sin is incompatible the law of God (the word).
Sin is incompatible with the law of God (the word)
Sin is incompatible with the law of God (the word)
When you see “the law” there can be different meanings depending on context. The law meaning the law of Moses, and then the other meaning the word of God.
The word gives understanding (Ps119:34)
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
The word displays God’s tender mercies (Ps119:77)
77 Let Your tender mercies come to me, that I may live; For Your law is my delight.
The Word and the law make us aware of sin (Rom7:7)
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
For with the awareness comes the penalty (Rom6:23)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John in our section is discussing sin as we already agreed. He is talking about the practice, the dwelling in sin, sin and the little children (or you may say the child of God).
From the lawless nature of sin John shifts to the reason Jesus came
To take away sins (v.5)
(Insert- SIN picture here)
Since we are talking about sin tonight, sin and the children of God I though maybe bring in some passages on sin, view on sin, biblically speaking.
SIN:
What is not of faith is sin (Rom14:23)
Thought of the foolish is sin (Pro24:9)
He who does not do the good , it is sin (Jm4:17)
All unrighteousness is sin (1Jn5:17)
Sin is lawlessness (1Jn3:4)
Sin is defilement (1Jn1:9-2:2) and it is defiance (1Jn3:4-8)
Something to think about.
when you are a child of God, born again of water and Spirit, sins forgiven, a new creature you cannot practice lawlessness (sin). For you are abiding in Christ and Christ in you. Jesus died to take away your sin. If we know Him and have obeyed Him, we share in the blessings of forgiveness and freedom from the bondage of sin. We are no longer enemies of the cross. (v.6) says:
6 No one who abides in Him sins; no one who sins has seen Him or knows Him.
To abide is to fellowship, to dwell, to live. The one who continues to deliberately abide in sin does not know Him!
(Transition) So, we have covered the definition of sin, the practice of sin, Christ and sin, and the evidence of sin so far. Sin is incompatible with the law of God (the Word) as you have seen, now let’s move on.
Sin is incompatible with the works of Christ
Sin is incompatible with the works of Christ
7 Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous;
Think back to the question asked when we started, what is the reason John is writing this? - to make sure no one deceives you!
Christ’s work transferred us (Col1:13)
13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,
Oh, you know I quote that verse alot, thought I would put in your face tonight!
Christ word redeemed us (Gal3:13)
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”—
Remember the law makes us aware of sin and our condemned state without the grace of God through faith in Christ Jesus, by the blood of Jesus being applied to take away our sin.
Christ provided a way to be sanctified (Eph5:25-27)
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
Christ gave Himself up for us that He might sanctify us (the church) so we would be spotless, without wrinkles, holy and blameless
Christ calls for us to be His righteousness (2Cor5:21)
21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
In Christ Jesus we may become the righteousness of God.
So, don’t be deceived, practice righteousness (1Jn3:7)
7 Let no one deceive you, my children! Whoever does what is right is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
(Transition) Sin is incompatible with the law of God, the word of God (vv.4-6) sin is incompatible with the works of Christ (v.7) now we will move on to (vv.8-10)
Sin is incompatible with the destroyed works of the devil
Sin is incompatible with the destroyed works of the devil
Jesus said “it is finished” (Jn19:30) Sin was defeated by Jesus becoming the acceptable sin offering. So, sin (dwelling); the works of the devil are destroyed by the works of Christ, so sin is incompatible since sin is destroyed.
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
Why did the Son of God appear (v.8)?
To destroy the works of the devil
What does the one born of God have in Him (v.9)?
He has His seed in him. This is the seed of Christ.
What is the evidence of the children of God (implied) in (v.10)?
He practices righteousness.
OK, time to slow down, think, talk some
When, where did Christ destroy the work of the devil? (stop, talk about this)
consider it is the fulfillment of this
1 The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” 2 The Lord will stretch forth Your strong scepter from Zion, saying, “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.”
Jesus Christ destroyed the works of the devil on the cross, so abide in Him, do not be deceived.
His seed is in you, His Spirit is in you (v.9) -so abide in Him, do not be deceived
When were you born of God?
consider
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”
5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
OK, consider these:
Those born of God do not practice sin (1Jn3:9)
Children of God are born from God’s love (1Jn4:7)
The one who believe in Jesus is born of God (1Jn5:1-3)
So abide in Him and do not be deceived and practice lawlessness
Your practice, that in which you dwell will display who you belong to!
So, child of God
Remember you are
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
You are born again
23 for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, “All flesh is like grass, And all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, And the flower falls off,
25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was preached to you.
Born again imperishable! by the living and enduring word of God. - - - - all of this makes you incompatible with the destroyed works of the devil!
We started tonight with standing for the reading of God’s word. What do you stand for, do you stand for Jesus, let your words and your deeds show it!
Do you stand in awe of the Lord! Let your deeds, your words and your life show it. Remember you do not live, dwell in sin because of Him who dwells in YOU!
