Finishing The Mission

The reason Jesus came to earth
to accomplish the task the Father has set before Him
there are — things John wants to convey to us through his rendering
Jesus was crucified for sin
He died as the King of the Jews/ whole world
Prophecy was fulfilled
Jesus died
Read John 19 17-37,
Pray

Jesus Was Crucified For Sin

John 19:17–18 LEB
and carrying for himself the cross, he went out to the place called The Place of a Skull (which is called Golgotha in Aramaic), where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle.
John’s account of the crucifixion is rather short
John Has him between the two thieves
this execution should have been 3 thieves/ Insurrectionists
Matthew 27:20 LEB
But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should ask for Barabbas and put Jesus to death.
Jesus took the place of Barabbas on this cross
Barabbas a notorious outlaw
We start with 3 crosses on that day
2 Thieves on the outside with Jesus in the middle
matt 27 38 “Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.”
Sin in born with, sin we have done
Sin on sin we will be judged and punished for
Believed Jesus takes on the sin of all who believe, justified
Luke 23 39-43 “And one of the criminals who were hanged there reviled him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself—and us!” But the other answered and rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, because you are undergoing the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for what we have done. But this man has done nothing wrong!” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom!” And he said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.””

The Placard

the crime written and placed above the head
John 19:19–22 LEB
And Pilate also wrote a notice and placed it on the cross, and it was written: “Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.” So many of the Jews read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city. And it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The king of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, I am king of the Jews.’ ” Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.”
The King of the Jews
in three languages
all the known languages of the known world
the king of the world
God the Father had His Own placard nailed to the cross
Colossians 2:13–14 LEB
And although you were dead in the trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, having destroyed the certificate of indebtedness in ordinances against us, which was hostile to us, and removed it out of the way by nailing it to the cross.
you and I violated the law and were dead,
you have been made alive because we trusted in Jesus’ work on the cross
we deserve to die Jesus took our place
just like Barabbas Jesus took our cross

The Prophecy Fulfilled

John wanted us to know that this was a fulfilment of the old testament writings
He wanted us to know that God could be trusted with what He says will happen
Prophecies are not predictions, they are facts you can take to the bank
1.
John 19:23–24 LEB
Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothing and made four shares—for each soldier a share—and the tunic. (Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top in a single piece.) So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it apart, but cast lots for it, to see whose it will be,” so that the scripture would be fulfilled that says, “They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.” Thus the soldiers did these things.
Psalm 22:18 LEB
They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.
2.
John 19:28–29 LEB
After this, Jesus, knowing that now at last everything was completed, in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a branch of hyssop and brought it to his mouth.
Psalm 69:21 LEB
They also gave me gall for food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
3.
John 19:31–33 LEB
Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an important day), asked Pilate that their legs could be broken and they could be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, after they saw he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
John 19:36 LEB
For these things happened in order that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not a bone of his will be broken.”
Psalm 34:20 LEB
He protects all his bones; not one of them is broken.
4.
John 19:34–35 LEB
But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. And the one who has seen it has testified, and his testimony is true, and that person knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
John 19:37 LEB
And again another scripture says, “They will look on the one whom they have pierced.”
Zechariah 12:10 LEB
“ ‘I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication, and they will look to me whom they pierced, and they shall mourn over him, as one wails over an only child, and they will grieve bitterly over him as one grieves bitterly over a firstborn.
this prophecy is then, and in the future

Jesus Died

John 19:33–35 LEB
But when they came to Jesus, after they saw he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water came out immediately. And the one who has seen it has testified, and his testimony is true, and that person knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
There are a lot of beliefs that Jesus did not fully die
there is one story that he died decades later at the foot of the Himalayas
He was buried alive and the coolness of the cave revived him
Another view is Pilate did not want to kill Jesus so he waited until there was only a couple of hours until the hour of preparation
not enough time to die and secretly pulled Jesus down early
They priced Jesus side and did not check for a pulse
John was there and His testimony to the facts is Jesus was dead
John 19:30 LEB
Then when he had received the sour wine, Jesus said, “It is completed,” and bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
Jesus voluntarily
took off his Heavenly glory
came to earth as a man from the seed of the woman
to be our kinsman redeemer
to die on the cross, a death that is considered a curse of God
and here we see He Gave up His Spirit
it was not taken
The Crucifixion of Jesus
The death of Jesus
was voluntary on His part
wholly for our benefit- eternal life
to be Justified
to receive His Righteousness
that we can be adopted into the family of God
that we become the bride of Christ
that we can be co inheritors of the Kingdom
What are you going to do with the Crucifixion of Jesus?
