I. The Uneventful Leg of the Trip vs. 4-5

A. Being led by the Holy Spirit isn’t always some mystical experience. A lot of times, the Holy Spirit will use ordinary means of Grace, to lead us. (Jobs, sickness, etc.) (Wayne Grudem’s move from Deerfield,IL to Phoenix, AZ ex) .
B. The Holy Spirit led Barnabas home, because it was a need place. It was the Hawaii of its day.
C. Yet for the first leg of the trip, they did what they knew to do, with little “success”! It was uneventful. It wasn’t that they failed, it was that they didn’t harvest the fruit, they merely planned and watered.

II. The Eventful Leg of the Trip vs. 6-12

A. Finally, when they get to the other side of the island, and there they meet a government official who wanted to know more about Jesus.
B. The procounsel was under the influence of a demonic false prophet who went by a name that meant “Son of Jesus” or “Son of Salvation”. Luke also calls him Elymas which means “skillful one” in Arabic. This guy was a smooth talker and did signs and wonders by slight of hand, or demons.
C. When summoned Elymas tried to stop them, but Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit calls him out, and temporarily blinds Elymas.
D. We see a change from Saul to Paul. Not only is Paul the Greek rendering of Saul, it means small. Paul was willing to be small, so Jesus could be big.
Romans 12:1 NASB95
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
Galatians 2:20 NASB95
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
E. The procounsel believed, and history shows us that his family would as well. Why? Because he was more interested in the teaching of Jesus, then he was the miracle of Paul. The word did the work. “I have done nothing, the Word has done and accomplished everything…I let the Word do it’s work!”- Martin Luther
