What is the key for wisdom?

This morning we are starting a new series, Decisions, Decisions: Biblical Wisdom for Life’s Choices.

The Bible doesn’t give us definitive answers for every decision we face in life or turn-by-turn directions for our proverbial journeys. You won’t find a verse about where to go to school, whether or not to take a job, or where you should retire. But the Bible does give us wisdom for how to make decisions (big and small) and trustworthy guidance that leads us to God’s ultimate will for our lives. This series explores how we can grow in wisdom by leaning on the power of Scripture

If you have your bible this morning please turn to Proverbs 1:1-7. if not you can follow along in a few minutes on the screen.

Before we look at this passage and what we can learn from Proverbs.

I have a question. So think for a moment.

What is wisdom?

the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise.

the soundness of an action or decision with regard to the application of experience, knowledge, and good judgment.

Where does wisdom come from?

Does it just come from read books, studying, school, on the job training.

Wisdom is often understood as possessing the skill to perform a task. We must be able to use wisdom to live in ways that will allow us the best possible outcome. Proverbs 1:1–7 speaks to the importance of wisdom in our daily lives.

God can give us wisdom too.

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

Who is Solomon?

Why is this man writing a book about wise. Who is this man to write such a book.

Solomon was the son of King David and he was the next king of Israel after the death of King David.

In 1 Kings 3 we can read the story of how Solomon was give all this wisdom by God. God came to him and as what should I give you? Solomon could have asked for anything in the world when God ask this but he didn’t. He asked God for the ablity to discern between good and evil. God was pleased with this and greated Solomon wisdom benond own understands.

1 Kings 4:30 CSB

30 Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.

Who is Solomon?

He was wiser then any other person. God have Solomon this wisdom so he could share it. He wrote this book so we can learn from and try to understand what biblical wisdom is. Also how we can lean on God for all our decisions. We see way this book was written in the next few verses.

Proverbs 1:2–7 CSB

2 For learning wisdom and discipline; for understanding insightful sayings; 3 for receiving prudent instruction in righteousness, justice, and integrity; 4 for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man— 5 let a wise person listen and increase learning, and let a discerning person obtain guidance— 6 for understanding a proverb or a parable, the words of the wise, and their riddles. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.

This book was written for learning wisdom

This wisdom is not just book smarts. The Hebrew word used is chokhmah. This word is technical skill; experience, shrewdness. it can also be wise judgement and making decision. Which can lead to a success. The the wisdom of some to learn a trade. The wisdom to understand what to avoid and when to avoid it. The wise choice to not do something reckless.

This book was written for understand

To help us understand what God is trying to say to us. We do not have all of our options laid out for us. Sometime we have no clue what we need to do. Sometime we need to understand a little more before we can make the wise choice.

This book was written for receiving instruction

All thourgh out this book you will find instruction is how to live a righteous life, a just life, and a life with integrity. All three of this thing are key to are Christian walk. We have to be willing to follow the instruction that have be written out.

This book was written for teaching

so we will not fall into the gullible path or fall victim to ignorance.

When we have a choice to make. There is a lot of time two path that we can choice from. One might be the best one and the other might just be ok. How do we choice the right path? By read and trying to understand the wisdom that Sololom lift for us. We can learn to choice the right path.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and discipline.

We must follow God

Fear is not be afraid of God but being reverent to God. God is willing to help is with our decisions but we have to follow him first. If you are not willing to follow him then it doesn’t matter.

if you choice not to follow him that ok but you are rejecting the teaching of God and believe yourself is wise enough to make this decision.

Wisdom is available to all who will make themselves available and then respond accordingly. The call of the listener is to accept that God’s wisdom is available if they are willing to receive it.

If we are to find wisdom, then we must seek it knowing that God wants that for us as well.

The key to wisdom is allowing it to have full authority over your life. In our lives we will seek either wisdom or folly; we will never be able to remain neutral in that search.
