Sermon Notes November 12, 2017 I Kings 1:1-10 Short Review Review the main points of the morning message. Some Questions for Discussion: Focus on: How do we pass on the ability to let God’s Word shape our lives? 1. Do you ever hear complaints about the “younger generation?” What do people complain about? Specific examples? 2. How does the changing landscape of the culture affect the values and lives of each generation? 3. Go around the room: tell us about your family. a. Where did the ‘values’ of your home come from? Tradition, culture, family? Was the Bible taught? Was it the basis of correction offered? Did the correction you received make sense, seem reasonable and good to you? b. How has that shaped your life? 4. Think about David: a. What are the wonderful things about his life, character and accomplishments which Scripture tells us? b. How does verse 6 sit in the context of David’s life? Why did David never ‘correct’ his son(s)? c. Compare verse 6 with Proverbs 13:24 and comment. 5. How is Adonijah described in (verse 6); how is Absalom described (II Samuel 25:25)? a. Where would these boys fit in with today’s society? b. What are the crucial elements missing in these descriptions? c. Comment on I Timothy 3:2-7. How does this list compare/contrast with the descriptions of David’s sons? 6. Question for parents, SS teachers, and members of the church family: How do you (did you/will you/would you) make the Word of God a part of training children? How did you make sure it was more than just knowing stories and memorizing verses? Practically, how did you/do you/would you labor to make it a life shaping tool?
