Sermon Notes December 17, 2017 I Kings 13 Short Review Review the main points of the morning message. Some Questions: Focus on: Honoring God means honoring all of God’s Word – big and small commandments. 1. Do you read biographies? Christian biographies? What are some things which have struck you, acts of great courage and faith, which men and women have done? 2. What do you admire about the ‘man of God’ in I Kings 13:1? 3. How would you feel if you were asked to confront the leader of a great country? a. Would you do it? What would hold you back? b. What are some of the hardest things you’ve had to do because of your commitment to Christ? 4. Why was the ‘man of God’ able to say no to the invitation of the king (vs. 9f), but fell for the invitation of the ‘old prophet’ (verse 18f)? 5. Leader: look up some of the heterodox movements (some call them ‘cults’) and when and how they began. E.G. Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, Christian Science – What do they have in common with the “old prophet” of verse 11f? 6. Is this passage troubling to you? Why did the man of God die? How do you make sense of it? 7. What are the “Big” things – clear, bold, unmistakable – which Christians are commanded? The 10 commandments, the two commandments, the great commission, or to key doctrines we have to believe. 8. What are the ‘small’ things which keep us in the center of God’s blessings? Look at the life of Jesus. He prayed (Lk. 5:16), studied and memorized the Word (see his quotations in Luke 4:3f and from the cross), attended ‘church’/synagogue every week (Luke 4:16) etc. 9. How did God speak to you through this account?
