Sermon Notes April 15, 2018 I Kings 16:25-33 (and rest of chapter) Short Review Review the main points of the morning message. Some Questions for Discussion: Focus on: What is the ‘way of Jeroboam’, is it relevant to consider it today, and how does it relate to the ‘Way of Jesus?’ 1. Who, in your family, is better at directions? Examples? 2. Have you ever gotten lost – share the story? Ever been lost even with GPS? 3. What resonated with you from the Sunday message? Are there thoughts, comments or questions? 4. Brief review of Jeroboam a. How did he get to the throne? (11:26f) b. What did he do when he got there? (12:25f) c. What were his sins? 5. What is wrong with instituting worship – a feast – as Jeroboam ‘devised in his own heart?’ (12:33) a. Discuss what attitude towards God’s Word this implies? b. Is this echoed in our culture’s attitude towards revealed truth – the Bible? How? 6. How did fear motivate Jeroboam? (12:27) How did this undermine his faith in God’s promise? 7. Have the group silently read 16:1-33, and note the occurrences of the phrase ‘more than’ (and the like). What does this imply about those who follow the ‘way of Jeroboam?’ What is the trajectory? 8. Discuss: The way of Self vs. the way of God; the way of Fear vs. the way of Faith; the way of the Culture vs. the way of the Word. For each ask: What choices do we face because of this as we try to walk in the way of Jesus? 9. How do we make a ‘course correction?’ Are you willing to share an example of God’s Word caused you to take a different course in your life? 10. How can we pray for one another in response to this portion of God’s Word?
