I Kings 19:1-18
Short Review
Ask one or more to review the main points of the morning message.
Some Questions for Discussion: Focus the discussion on: How God heals those who are broken hearted,
depressed and feeling all alone.
1. Go around the room: how many of you know someone who struggles with depression?
a. Do you think it is common or rare?
b. Is it hard for people who are depressed to talk about it? Why? Is it hard in the church? Why?
2. What resonated with you from the Sunday message? Are there thoughts, comments or questions?
3. Describe Elijah’s emotional state:
a. On the mountain top – the events at Mt. Carmel.
b. When he comes to Jezreel – what was he expecting, what does he find?
c. Sitting under the tree (verse 4)
d. Hiding in the cave
4. Many people warn that after the spiritual mountain there is the danger of a deep valley – especially if you
are serving the kingdom in some ministry, or involved in a kind of spiritual battle. Why, do you think, that
is?
5. Comment on God’s command in verse 11a. What does this command mean and why was this God’s
remedy for Elijah? [You could look at Psalm 73 – his complaints; verse 13; and then verse 17]
6. Honest Self-reflection: Which, do you think, would be more helpful to you when you are in a valley of
despair, to see a powerful display of God (wind, earthquake, fire) proving His presence, or to hear the still,
small voice? Why?
7. How has God lifted you up in the past?
8. How can we pray for one another – or loved ones who are far from the Lord – in response to this portion
of God’s Word?
