February 24, 2019 – How is your Soul? (Romans 6:1-13)
How to engage your head, your heart, and your hands for the health of your soul
Sermon Summary: We were asked to consider the question, “How is your soul?” Looking at Romans 6
and the storm on Galilee, he told us that the health of our soul depends on:
(1) Our heads knowing our identity in Christ—who I am, who I belong to, and who I am becoming (a
child of God saved by grace).
(2) Our hearts believing this to be true—this truth must move from our head to our heart.
(3) Our hands need to obey—we need to yield to the authority of Christ and keep his commands.
If you like alliteration: KNOW IT in your HEAD, BELIEVE IT in your HEART, OBEY IT with your HANDS.
Discussion Questions (Provided by Robert)
1. The scriptures tell us to "Guard your soul..." How do we think about our 'soul'? What are the
components normally considered?
2. What are some predictors for the condition of our soul?
3. Why do you think the disciple's hearts were hardened?
4. Why is our identity in Christ important for the wellbeing of our soul? How did the disciples identify
with Jesus just hours removed from the feeding of the 5000?
5. What does it take to recognize and identify with Jesus in the middle of a storm?
6. Read Romans 6:1-13. How would you paraphrase what Paul wants us to KNOW?
7. When we move from the head to the heart, how is believing (reckoning, counting on) different from
knowing?
8. Discuss the statement: 'Where God breathes/speaks, He gives life to our souls' (e.g., Gen. 2:7; Ps.
33:9; 2 Tim. 3:17; Jesus calling Lazarus out, Jn. 11:43).
9. What does it mean to be 'freed from sin and slaves of righteousness?' How does 'yielding to God'
benefit the health of our soul?
10. How would you assess the condition of your soul?
