We live in a world with MASS communication.
The average person spends 9 hours a day consuming media...
Every 72 hours the information on the interent doubles...
50,000 google searches happen around the globe every second…Let’s just hope most of those dont happen during my sermon!
In a world constantly teeming and buzzing around us…we need to slow down and hear the voice of God revealing to our hearts who He is, What he has done, and What he will do.
AND IN THIS PASSAGE...
God Speaks!
God Speaks!
In Psalm 19 we get a Song of David written to teach us How God Speaks and Why God speaks:
How God Speaks:
How God Speaks:
There are 2 ways in this passage that tell us how God speaks:
God Speaks Through His Creation.
I’ve shared this before, but I love to star gaze…there is just something about looking up on a clear nights sky that puts my heart and my soul in order when I stop and allow my mind to wonder about the beauty and depth of the universe we live in.
And in this Psalm…I understand why that’s the case...
Psalm 19:1–6 (ESV)
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
You see, in every sunrise and every sunset…a sermon is being preached.
When you go outside on a clear nights sky, and you look up and see the countless stars in the nights sky beaming and flickering with brillance…a message is being communicated.
When you see the moon like we had last night…big and brillant and beautiful…reflecting the light of the sun…In those moments…when you are swept with wonder and amazement at the beauty of creation…recognize this truth…you have stepped into God’s theatre where He is proclaiming his love, power, authority, might, and ultimately—as David says, His glory—known.
And God is speaking this at every moment every single day to anyone has the ears to hear it...
Paul says in Romans 1:19-20
Romans 1:19–20 (ESV)
For what can be known about God is plain because God has shown it to them (ALL PEOPLE). For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made...
Through Creation…God speaks...
Therefore, we should echo the words of the Psalter in Psalm 8:3-4:
Psalm 8:3–4 (ESV)
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
God Speaks Through His Creation...
But not only does God speak through his creation…the second way...God Speaks (is) Through His Commands (His Word).
Psalm 19:7–10 (ESV)
The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure,
making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean,
enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true,
and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold,
even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey
and drippings of the honeycomb.
The Word of God for David was:
When David examined the Word of God he found that it was Perfect, Trustworthy, Clear, Pure, Complete, True, Righteous, and Sweet.
And when he studied his Bible he found that God’s Word spoke to Him…it revived his soul and gave him wisdom (v.7), it made him rejoice and enlightened his eyes (v.8), it endured forever and was righteous altogether (v.9)…the word of God was More desirable than the most refined gold, and sweeter to the soul than the most fresh and delicious honey.
The Apostle Paul would later say it this way:
2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV)
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
The writer of Hebrews said:
Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
And many of us…when we hear those words…we agree...
But the truth is…for far to many of us…we agree with our mouths. We mentally ascent to the idea that the Bible is important because God speaks to us through it…but our lives and our examples tell a different story.

—>What story does your Bible reading intake tell about what you REALLY believe about the Word of God?
-John Piper-
“One of the greatest uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove on the Last Day that prayerlessness was not from a lack of time...”
(and I would add time in the Word of God)
Why God Speaks:
Why God Speaks:
Psalm 19:11–14 (ESV)
Moreover, by them is your servant warned;
in keeping them there is great reward.
Who can discern his errors?
Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins;
let them not have dominion over me!
Then I shall be blameless,
and innocent of great transgression.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
David says that the Word of God...
v. 11—David says that the Word of God warns us and reveals to us the blessing of obedience.
v. 12—The Word of God reveals to us our errors and shows us how to be declared innocent from the sin that is hidden deep in the caverns of our hearts...
Here is the point: God speaks to us through his Creation and ultimately through His word because he wants us to know Him…
God wants you to know Him…think about that…He has not hidden himself from us. He has made who he is, what he is like, and what he has done readily avaliable to us…if we will just take the time to look up and see His glory beaming brilliantly through His creatures. If we will just take the time to look down and read what He has spoken to us in His Word.
GOD WANTS A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU...
You make think to yourself this morning…Well, Jonathan, you obviously dont know me...
You dont know my past...
You dont know what Ive done...
You dont know how sinful I am...
There’s no way God wants a relationship with someone like me...
Youre right…I dont know your past…I dont know what you’ve done...
But I know what God has done for you...
I know that God forgives and cleanses sinners from the deepest and darkest sins.
I know that Jesus is God who took on flesh, to live the life you could never live, and died the death you deserved on the Cross…so that you could live at peace with God.
So as Paul says in 2 Cor. 5:21
2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
I dont know everything about you…but I know enough about Jesus to tell you that God wants a relationship with you.
And this is why he has spoken to us in His word…because he wants us to know Him and to Be known By Him...
