What Are Ordinances?

An authoritative command or order.
Why would we do these things?
It is something that we do to demonstrates our faith.
Things that should observed.
Things that we do to remember how we relate with God.

What are Sacraments?

An authoritative command or order.
It is something that we do to get more of God’s grace.
1) Baptism, 2) Penance,, 3) The Eucharist, 4) Confirmation, 5) Anointing of the sick, (Last Rites), 6) Holy Orders, 7) Matrimony
1) Baptism, which the Roman Catholic Church teaches removes original sin while infusing the act with sanctifying grace. 2) Penance, in which one confesses his/her sins to a priest. 3) The Eucharist, considered the reception and consumption of the actual body and blood of Christ. 4) Confirmation, a formal acceptance into the church along with special anointing of the Holy Spirit. 5) Anointing of the sick, performed by a priest using oil. The priest anoints the sick persons forehead and hands with oil. This is associated not only with bodily healing but with forgiveness of sins. When performed on a dying person, it is called Extreme Unction (or last rites or final anointing). 6) Holy Orders, the process by which men are ordained to clergy. 7) Matrimony, which provides special grace to a couple.
All the grace we will ever need is received the moment we trust Jesus, by faith, as Savior (Ephesians 2:8-9). The saving grace that is granted at the moment of genuine faith is the only saving grace God’s Word calls on us to receive. This grace is received by faith, not by observing rituals. So, while the seven sacraments are “good things to do,” they do not give us more grace.

Jesus gave those who follow Him two ordinances.

Christ commanded that they be observed always.
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the two ordinances that were commanded by Christ.
Other practices sometimes called ordinances: foot washing, the holy kiss.
It is not found in Scripture where these other practices are commanded to be perpetually observed.
Baptism and the Lord’s Supper were to continue on after Christ, after the New Testament.
These ordinances are visible.
When someone observes a baptism, they are seeing a picture of the Gospel, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the Lord’s Table the bread symbolizes the body of Christ broken on the cross, the juice symbolizes His blood that was shed for us.

Jesus gave us ordinances, not sacraments.

Ephesians 2:8–9 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Romans 3:28 ESV
28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
Titus 3:5 ESV
5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,

The Ordinance of Baptism

What is Baptism?
It is spiritual.
Galatians 3:26–27 (ESV)
26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
It is physical.
Acts 18:8 ESV
8 Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized.
It does not save you.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Luke 23:43 ESV
43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
It is symbolic of a spiritual reality.
Romans 6:1–4 ESV
1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
It is a step of obedience to Christ
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Acts 2:36–38 (ESV)
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” 37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Why be Baptized?

Because of the command of Christ (Matthew 28:19-20).
Because of the example of Christ (Matthew 3:13-17).
Because it was practiced by the early church (Acts 2:40-42, 16:19-34).

Who should be Baptized?

Acts 8:35–39 ESV
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him. 39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more, and went on his way rejoicing.
Those who express belief in of the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Jesus into heaven on their behalf and want to identify with the Good News!
Infants???
There were no infants baptized in the Word of God.
There is no record of any commandment to baptize our children prior to salvation.
Baptism has no significance for an unbeliever.

When should I be Baptized?

Paul talking about his conversion story.
Acts 22:16 ESV
16 And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’
After you express faith in the Good News of Jesus Christ. It should be your first step of obedience.

What does the word baptize mean?

Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains 53.31 βαπτίζω; καταβαπτίζω; βαπτισμός, οῦ

βαπτίζω

to wash, to immerse
“Whether the person baptized is to be wholly immersed and that whether once or thrice or whether he is only to be sprinkle with water, is not of the least consequence: Churches should be at liberty to adopt either, according to the diversity of climates, although it is evident that the term baptism means to immerse and that was the form used by the primitive church.” - CALVIN (INSTITUTES)
Neither sprinkling nor pouring would picture the death, burial or resurrection.

The Ordinance of the Lord’s Supper

Meaning of Lord’s Supper
It is something we do to remember what Jesus has done for us.
Instituted by Christ the night before His betrayal and crucifixion. (1 Corinthians 11:23-25)
1 Corinthians 11:23–25 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
They were gathered and celebrating a meal that the Jewish people had celebrated for centuries…and then Jesus was going to add a new meaning to it.
Lev. 16 - Passover Lamb
1 Corinthians 5:7 ESV
7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
“Do this” indicates an obligation.
People that celebrate this meal (communion) do so because they want to demonstrate their connection to the new symbolism that Jesus was giving this meal.
False theology of transubstantiation (Luke 22:19-20), (John 6). Symbolic...
Jesus did not mean this is literally my body and blood.
Roman Catholic priests say a prayer over the bread and over the wine and, through his prayer, turn those elements into the literal body and blood of Jesus Christ.
When a Roman Catholic takes the mass, they are receiving Jesus Christ literally. Catholics will often say they received Christ last Saturday night.
He could not have meant his words literally because He was literally there at the moment. He meant it as an illustration of what would happen the next day.
It is something we do to remember what we will do with Jesus.
Matthew 26:29 ESV
29 I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Revelation 19:9 ESV
9 And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
Who should take communion?
FCC practices an open communion table.
Anyone who has been saved by Jesus is able to participate.
In order to participate rightly, a person be in good standing with the Lord and His corporate gathered Body in order to partake. (1 Corinthians 11:27-30)
1 Cor. 11:27-29
1 Corinthians 11:27–29 ESV
27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment on himself.
How often should we celebrate the Lord’s Supper?
1 Corinthians 11:26 ESV
26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
