Guidelines to Follow

Ex: A Potter’s wheel
The principle must be found in the text.
God is love though true is not found in this text.
It must be timeless.
The principle must be true in the past, in the present, and in the future.
It cannot only be effective in particular cultures.
The principle in this text does not just pertain to Joshua, National Israel, or the Promised Land.
It cannot contradict other Scriptures.
For Example - As God promised Joshua success in conquering the promised land, we can claim success in all areas of life through the name of Jesus!
This principle contradicts Paul’s words to the Philippian church (Phil. 4:12)
It should be relevant throughout all ages.
When comparing the principle to problems of the past, present, or future, its solution should still be relevant.

How the Principle Works

The principle is given under a historical context and through a literary context, but must be applied in the present context.
Depending upon the contexts, there can be multiple principles. It is not a one for one ratio.
As the people of God, fear should not be a factor in God’s command.
Godly leaders are not qualified by their abilities, but they are qualified by their call!
God’s presence is the power in victory.
