Let’s get into the Text this morning in Romans 20 verse 1
Let’s get into the Text this morning in Romans 20 verse 1
1 On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
2 So she went running to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They’ve taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they’ve put him!”
3 At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.
4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.
5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.
6 Then, following him, Simon Peter also came. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.
7 The wrapping that had been on his head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself.
8 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then also went in, saw, and believed.
9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.
10 Then the disciples returned to the place where they were staying.
Point #1: Mary Goes to the Tomb to Anoint Jesus’ Body; She Finds an Empty Tomb, Then Reports It to the Disciples!
Point #1: Mary Goes to the Tomb to Anoint Jesus’ Body; She Finds an Empty Tomb, Then Reports It to the Disciples!
Easton’s Bible Dictionary tells us, “Immediately after decease the body was washed, and then wrapped in a large cloth (Acts 9:37; Matt. 27:59; Mark 15:46). In the case of persons of distinction, aromatics were laid on the folds of the cloth (John 19:39; comp. John 12:7). As a rule the burial (q.v.) took place on the very day of the death (Acts 5:6, 10), and the body was removed to the grave in an open coffin or on a bier (Luke 7:14). After the burial a funeral meal was usually given (2 Sam. 3:35; Jer. 16:5, 7; Hos. 9:4).”
Because Jesus was crucified by the Romans access to his body was not immediate.
Joseph of Arimathea had to procure the body from Pilate
Joseph had brought a tomb that no one had ever been laid in...
Nicodemus provided for the cost of the burial spices...
If there was a women or girl who loved the deceased they would have been the one to wash the body, apply the aromatics and wrap them in clothes.
Enter Mary Madeleine and up to four other women… (Luke 24:1,10; Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:1)
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.
1 After the Sabbath, as the first day of the week was dawning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to view the tomb.
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they could go and anoint him.
a. So why does John just focus on just Mary Magdalene?
Why happens when a group of people witness a car wreck?
The eye witness accounts have different perspectives with different focus’
John chooses to focus on Mary… (MORE ON THAT IN A MINUTE)
3. The women report the stone being rolled away and Jesus’ tomb being empty to Peter and the disciples...
a. John again identifies himself as an eye witness (The disciple that Jesus loved)
i. Peter and John race to Jesus’ tomb...
a. John points out that he is faster than Peter...
b. When they arrive they find Jesus’ grave clothes empty and neatly folded...
ii. John shares that he entered the empty tomb and believed!
a. John then gives and editorial note to give us insight… “For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he must rise from the dead.”
4. At this point the disciples returned to where they were staying...

11 But Mary stood outside the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb.
12 She saw two angels in white sitting where Jesus’s body had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet.
13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “Because they’ve taken away my Lord,” she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put him.”
14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know it was Jesus.
15 “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?” Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.”
17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what he had said to her.
Point #2: Jesus Decides to Reveal Himself Alive to a Woman Who Had Once Been Possessed by Seven Demons! (Mark 16:9)
Point #2: Jesus Decides to Reveal Himself Alive to a Woman Who Had Once Been Possessed by Seven Demons! (Mark 16:9)
Why did John focus on Mary?
BECAUSE IF MARY CAN BELIEVE AND BE SAVED ANYONE CAN BELIEVE AND BE SAVED!
Mary encounters two angels...
They ask, “Why are you crying?”
She responds, “Someone has taken my Lord!”
Mary turns around and encounters Jesus but did not recognize him...’.
Jesus asks her, “why are you crying? Who is it that you’re seeking?”
Supposing he was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve carried him away, tell me where you’ve put him, and I will take him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
Turning around, she said to him in Aramaic,[a] “Rabboni!”—which means “Teacher.”
17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus told her, “since I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”
18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them what[b] he had said to her.
19 When it was evening on that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20 Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.”
22 After saying this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Point #3: Jesus Appears to the Disciples and Gives Them the Holy Spirit; The Disciples Rejoice When They See Him!
Point #3: Jesus Appears to the Disciples and Gives Them the Holy Spirit; The Disciples Rejoice When They See Him!
The first day of the week the disciples were together in a locked room for fear of the Jews...
Jesus appears to them…and says “Peace be with you.”
Why peace be with you? Because they entire realty had been turned on its head!!!
Jesus shows them his hands and side to prove who he is and to prove he is alive!
Jesus breathes on them and they receive the Holy Spirit!
He gives a charge: If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, then are retained.”
24 But Thomas (called “Twin”), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
25 So the other disciples were telling him, “We’ve seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.”
26 A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don’t be faithless, but believe.”
28 Thomas responded to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Jesus said, “Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.”
Point #4: Thomas Says That He Refuses to Believe That Jesus Has Risen Unless He Sees for Himself…So Jesus Shows Him!
Point #4: Thomas Says That He Refuses to Believe That Jesus Has Risen Unless He Sees for Himself…So Jesus Shows Him!
When Jesus appeared, Thomas was not with them...
When Thomas returns, the disciples tell him that they have seen The Lord Alive!
Thomas refuses the believe!
He says, “unless put my fingers in his nail holes and my hand in his side I won’t believe.”
That’s why his nickname is doubting Thomas!
A week later Jesus appears again to them with Thomas present and says, “peace be with you.”
Jesus calls Thomas to put his fingers in his nail holes and put his hand in his side...
Jesus is willing to prove himself to us!
Many times in scripture Jesus says, “Let it be done for you according to your faith!”
If you believe that Jesus is able to help you, to work in your circumstances He absolutely will...
If you believe that Jesus can’t, He won’t…
53 When Jesus had finished these parables, he left there.
54 He went to his hometown and began to teach them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?
55 Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother called Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, aren’t they all with us? So where does he get all these things?”
57 And they were offended by him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his household.”
58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.
WHEN WE HUMBLE OURSELVES AND TRUST JESUS HE WORKS IN OUR LIFE!

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.
31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
