The DESTINATION or the JOURNEY? Which one matters?
The DESTINATION or the JOURNEY? Which one matters?
(refer to background picture). First fuel delivery. Ref Malcolm Naden.
People travel – (one day!). What’s more important – the destination? Or the journey? Do we just want to get there? Or spend time along the way to enjoy scenery? Or maybe do something to add to your whole trip?
Which one is more important may depend upon the purpose of your trip. Perhaps a photographer who wants to stop. Or a map maker who HAS to stop. Or a transport driver who just needs to deliver something in shortest time. Family holiday –“are we there yet?” – obviously don’t like being in the car. Long distance running.
As God’s people, what’s our destination?
Pic 1 - First Photo – road, with destination just past The Bucketts. Come long way, still a way to go. Just want to arrive.
BUT – Pic 2 – if only focused on destination, would miss scenery. (Naden’s purpose, goal – don’t get caught. Didn’t have much time to stop and enjoy scenery). Focus on the end à miss opportunities to chat with other travellers; assist others on their journey. Miss what the locations along the way can offer e.g. food, fuel, rest.
What’s this got to do with us as Christians?
What’s our goal? Purpose in following Jesus? Destination? What does the end of our journey look like?
Many answers – eternal life; home in heaven; live forever in a city paved with gold; worship at God’s throne; inherit a mansion; enter rest with no more pain or tears; put on immortality.
Should ask – what’s GOD’S purpose for me? Actually – “What’s God’s purpose for US?” What’s HIS goal for OUR lives? Where does GOD want US to end up? What destination does GOD want US to arrive at?
