Bucket List Story
My sister in law had one in the summer and it was just a white girls bucket list.
“1: totes adorable pic of my legs on the beach, go on a road trip, post 15,000 Instagram pictures, capture a butterfly.
We all have dreams, things we want to accomplish before we die right? Some of us have visions of retiring and becoming missionaries, or serving in a greater compacity in the church, or being incredible grand parents who get to bless your children if you have any.
Joke Some want to go sky diving, or rocky mountain climbing, or 2.7 seconds on a bull named fumanchu
What is your bucket list? If you had a few days left to live, and you knew it, what would you do?
If it was me, I would probably cry and hold my children...then go mountain biking or skiing or climb a mountain haha!
I had a friend Talk about trip to out West, 5 day road trip, 72 hours of driving through state of emergency…all because of a bucket list! He wanted to ask a girl out! SHE SHOT HIM DOWN!!!
What does Jesus do in his last days? How does he show the extent of his love. We turn to John 13.
vs1
Jesus knew that his hour had come. He knew the pain and heartbreak he was to experience.
He loved his disciples, his best friends.
What does he do with his knowledge? Does he write a book or position his own self interests?
Lets find out.
vs2-5
Jesus knew that God had put all things under him. He had total power and authority.
Jesus knew he came from God and was going to God the Father.
Jesus wasn’t just some guy at the wrong place at the wrong time. Everything is Jesus’s life was very intentional as the Holy Spirit led him into ministry.
This was culturally shocking and even demeaning for Jesus to do.
They were all sitting at a small low standing table, leaning next to each other, Jesus gets up.
Jesus starts removing his clothes until essentially he just has his undergarments on and wraps a towel around himself which is what slaves wore. SHOCKING.
Everything is silent...Pours water into a basin, washes his disciples feet.
Jesus knew exactly what he was doing and why he was doing it. He wasn’t ashamed because he knew what real shame was and he was about to face it. The most imporant things at this moment to Jesus was serving his best friends and disciples and showing them what it means to love.
Do you know who you are in Christ? DO YOU REALLY KNOW? DOES IT CHANGE HOW YOU RESPOND TO THIS WORLD?
Mark 10:45 “45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.””
Phil 2:8 “8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
vs6-11
vs 6 Peters response is great, he thought he knew the test and was about to pass. No! Not me! I’ll wash you instead! - He didn’t understand
7-11Do you understand? Are you living a life like Peter. You think Jesus is testing you and so you are trying to do do do… Or have you let your daddy wash you. Has his love and kindness, his mercy and sweetness does it wash over you each and every day. Do you wake up expecting a kiss before you walk out the door, like my son before school? God, he put on human flesh so that you would not just know…but EXPERIENCE his absolute undying love and romanticism for you. Has Jesus washed you? Do you feel clean? VS 10 again
vs12-16
Jesus returns. This is a theme in John’s gospel. He returned to his place.
Do you understand what I have done for you? What a great question. Do you understand what Jesus has done for you?
You call me teacher and Lord, how does a teacher and person in positions of power act. They serve.
vs17 You will be blessed if you DO them.
Love REQUIRES action in Jesus’s Kingdom. It is tangible.
Love REQUIRES moving towards the “least of these”.
I joked about washing each others feet.
Love REQUIRES being inconvenienced by serving
Love REQUIRES being an absolute fool for Jesus.
Does your life look foolish?
“The Moravians had learned that the secret of loving the souls of men was found in loving the Savior of men. On October 8, 1732, a Dutch ship left the Copenhagen harbor bound for the Danish West Indies. On board were the two first Moravian missionaries; John Leonard Dober, a potter, and David Nitschman, a carpenter. Both were skilled speakers and ready to sell themselves into slavery to reach the slaves of the West Indies. As the ship slipped away, they lifted up a cry that would one day become the rallying call for all Moravian missionaries, “May the Lamb that was slain receive the reward of His suffering.” The Moravian’s passion for souls was surpassed only by their passion for the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.”
What is your rallying cry?
This footwashing was a foreshadowing of the Cross, Jesus had already cleansed the poor and outcast, he cleansed women, he cleansed the blind and the sick, he cleansed the temple and lazarus from his tomb, he here now cleanses his disciples. All of these miracles and cleansing stories foreshadow the great miracle of the Christ and the scandelous work of Jesus cleansing us. Broken and uncapable people.
The Gospel according to John 1. Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet (13:1–17)

The footwashing was shocking to Jesus’ disciples, but not half as shocking as the notion of a Messiah who would die the hideous and shameful death of crucifixion, the death of the damned. But the two events—the footwashing and the crucifixion—are truly of a piece: the revered and exalted Messiah assumes the role of the despised servant for the good of others

You will be blessed if you do them. Be blessed when you serve your wife or husband or kids, or grandkids, or neighbors.
