Introduction
Has your parents ever taken you somewhere to which you responded, “I would have been better off at home?” Making a quick judgement before you are even given the reason fo why you are there. You simply provide the complaint and blame of your unhappiness and discontentment.
That is exactly what we have read in this text.
Let us leave here tonight believing that God leads us to where he wants to provide for us. He provides in ways of which will grow our understanding and love for Him.
1) A Divinely Appointed Hunger
1) A Divinely Appointed Hunger
A. They chose to embrace discontentment
A. They chose to embrace discontentment
Remember, God had given they favor in the eyes of the Egyptians which resulted in them receiving enough supplies for a couple of months.
Now, they had ran out of Egypt’s supply. WHO ALLOWED THAT?????
Notice how they approached the circumstance with a knee-jerk reaction; in their hunger; in their emotions.
Notice the power of discontentment (vv2-3)
God has brought us here to kill us all.
Let’s be honest. If God wanted to kill them all, the Red Sea would have been the prime moment to accomplish that.
It blinded them to the many provisions, power and goodness God had provided in more desperate situations.
SIMPLY — they did not trust God!
They undervalued their deliverance!
They wish to have died in Egypt with their “so called” PLENTY.
It is easy to talk-up what you had in the past when what you have in the present doesn’t meet your criteria!
Quote: Discontent magnifies what is past, and vilifies what is present, without regard to truth or reason. [Henry, M. (1994). Matthew Henry’s commentary on the whole Bible: complete and unabridged in one volume (p. 117). Peabody: Hendrickson.]
Turn to: Psalm 106:7–13 (KJV 1900) — 7 Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; They remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; But provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. 8 Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, That he might make his mighty power to be known. 9 He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: So he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness. 10 And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, And redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. 11 And the waters covered their enemies: There was not one of them left. 12 Then believed they his words; They sang his praise. 13 They soon forgat his works; They waited not for his counsel:
B. They attacked God’s messenger.
B. They attacked God’s messenger.
Every time they murmured (which they did often) was actually directed toward God.
It is easy to throw some ugly color on the best actions.
They actually thought they were simply complaining about God’s man.
Illustration: Have you ever heard the phrase, “Don’t shoot the messenger?”
To attack God’s messenger is equal to attack God Himself.
Before you side-step over with a little group to murmur against God’s instruments who are actually trying to help you grow, think of this: Have I reflected upon God regarding my thoughts toward them?
When they speak instructions, reprovements, rebukes, etc.
Many want to quarrel and be angry with their pastor when their message touches a tender spot of their life.
You my friend are quarreling with your Master and Maker!
No one took the step of leading a prayer meeting!
2) A Purposeful Hunger
2) A Purposeful Hunger
They were on a journey to become a people who completely trusts the Lord.
Their food from Egypt was enough to bring them to this point.
They were to NO LONGER LIVE by the supply of Egypt!
The place of their former bondage!
It was time to trust God and God alone!
APPLICATION: Everyone who is born-again is to now only look to God for all needs and supply.
(v4) God was putting them to the test of faith.
Could they trust Him when living from hand to mouth? In other words, from check to check, stretching the money, having to budget tightly, etc.
Could they be satisfied with their “daily bread” and trust God for tomorrows?
Do we not think that the One who made you would forget to feed you?
God brought them not there to kill them, but to FEED THEM!!!!
Quote: “Be assured, if you walk with Him, and Look to Him and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.” (George Muller)
Notice 2 main reasons why God allowed this hunger to occur:
(v6) “then ye shall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt”
Even though Moses was the instrument used to lead them, it was ultimately GOD who delivered them!
If Moses had delivered them, they would have starved!
Jesus even had to remind them — John 6:32 (KJV 1900) — 32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
(v12) “ye shall know that I am the Lord your God”
This has been the on going truth God has been proving to them ever since Moses stepped back into the land of Egypt.
God desires for all His children to continue their pilgrimage with this reality branded on their heart; “Jesus is our Lord.”
