Read Text
NLT
For to which of the angels did He ever say,
“You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You”?
And again,
“I will be a Father to Him
And He shall be a Son to Me”?
And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says,
“And let all the angels of God worship Him.”
And of the angels He says,
“Who makes His angels winds,
And His ministers a flame of fire.”
But of the Son He says,
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever,
And the righteous scepter is the scepter of His kingdom.
“You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness above Your companions.”
And,
“You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth,
And the heavens are the works of Your hands;
They will perish, but You remain;
And they all will become old like a garment,
And like a mantle You will roll them up;
Like a garment they will also be changed.
But You are the same,
And Your years will not come to an end.”
But to which of the angels has He ever said,
“Sit at My right hand,
Until I make Your enemies
A footstool for Your feet”?
Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out to render service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?
Basketball was my treasure growing up
Mahamad Ali-I am the greatest
Because Jesus is the greater we must make him our daily priority [even over angels] (5-7)
The audience had a high regard for angels and so did others. At the time Jews placed a great emphasis on them some probably even worshiped them.
What do we need to know about angels?
Angels Role-
-They helped bring about the ten commandments
-Created
-heavenly beings
-Messengers for god = main role
-Reveal God’s will
-Announce Key events
‘The audience’s respect for the role of angels provided a reference point from which to speak of the much higher position(and, therefore, authority) of the Son of God.’
It would be like me saying Texas High school football is big but the NFL is even bigger.
Ministering spirit
From this passage we see v. 14
Ministering Spirits who will serve those who inherit salvation.
However the author could be using
In Hebrews there are a lot of arguments that move from lesser to greater.
You see the audience were having to suffer a lot for following Jesus wholeheartedly and it costs them: jobs, family relationships, relationships and much.
Today it still costs to follow Jesus. We have to see that today Jesus is still greater and many of us don’t follow him wholeheartedly because other things become greater.
How is Jesus great than the angels
If angels are this high than Jesus is this high:
Jesus has a higher place than angels: Special Relationship with Father-
‘A poetic especially is God’s Son (Psalm 2:7). today I have begotten you. A poetic expression reflecting the unique relationship of the Son to God Almighty; this speaks of entering into a new phase of that Father-Son relationship and should not be pressed to suggest that the Son once did not exist (he has begotten the already living son “today”).
Do your remember in the Bible the father said of Jesus-This is my son in whom I am well pleased.

ⓐ of Christ, as the firstborn of a new humanity which is to be glorified, as its exalted Lord is glorified πρωτότοκος ἐν πολλοῖς ἀδελφοῖς Ro 8:29. Also simply πρωτότοκος Hb 1:6; cp. Rv 2:8 v.l. This expr., which is admirably suited to describe Jesus as the one coming forth fr. Now I will call all the youth my kids. But the kids I actually birthed I have a special relationship with.
Jesus demands worship from Angels: He is greater.
Jesus is the author of the angels and not the other way around.
‘Quoting Ps. 104:4. Angels are servants (as wind and fire are) and therefore subordinate to the Son.’
Illustration:
Examples of superior-Corliss on the Bball court
I was a good basketball player in my own right
Time I scored on an NBA player
But then there was a time I played with Corliss
College player dunked on him
Corliss came and dunked
It wasn’t that I was a bad player or anyone out there was bad. Corliss was just greater than all of us.
IN the same way God is greater than angels and not only angels but anything in your life.
Application:
Jesus was becoming less in their life. My questions to you is:
What is greater in your life right now than Jesus?
If you are not a believer in Jesus you can make Jesus great in your life by trusting in his free gift that he offers at calvary to anyone who will acknowledge their sin and turn to him. He died on the cross to become your substitute for sin.
Maybe you are like the hebrews and you know Jesus maybe even for a long time but Jesus is not the greatest thing in your life right now and you need to turn to him and ask for help and forgiveness
Because Jesus is the greater we must know and obey God’s Word (2:5-9).
The author just heavens in the Old Testament to his letter to the Hebrews. These Hebrews had to have known the Old Testament.
This Bibe is are authority it does not matter what a great preacher says this is the very words of God.
Word of God:
Being wholly and verbally God-given, Scripture is without error or fault in all its teaching, no less in what it states about God's acts in creation, about the events of world history, and about its own literary origins under God, than in its witness to God's saving grace in individual lives.
Why should we know and obey God’s word?
My kids have a Bible and it says every story whispers his name.
Marcionism
Because Jesus is all over it
David Covenant
v. 5 = Psalm 2:7-12
2 Samuel 7:11-13
7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord:
He said to Me, ‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance,
And the very ends of the earth as Your possession.
9 ‘You shall abreak them with a rod of iron,
You shall shatter them like earthenware.’ ”
10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment;
Take warning, O judges of the earth.
11 Worship the Lord with areverence
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,
For His wrath may soon be kindled.
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!
David covenant- is promised to David but fulfilled through Jesus
2 Samuel 7:11-13
12 “When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

The author is connecting all of these to Jesus

There was so much evidence that he had to admit it
Application:

Do you see the connection with Jesus and the Old Testament?
Storybook Bible-Every story whispers his name
Are you applying your Bible?
[This audience knew their Bible but they were losing sight of the main Character]
are you applying it to your life?
Jim Elliott Quote-The word will keep your from sin or sin will keep you from the word.
Have some resources if you want them.
Because Jesus is the greater we must guard our hearts from being glory thieves (8-13)
Who does God the father says Jesus is:
His throne is forever and ever. Attribute Eternal.
This passage teaches that Jesus laid the foundation of the earth and that the heavens are the works of his hands. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. contrast this to even the heavens which he will role up and will perish. Are you investing your life in the eternal or temporal.

We live for the temporary and God desire we live and children of his kingdom.

What would you say to people who say if he was begotten he is not eternal?
He brought the firstborn into the World-It does not say he was created [but he was born on earth]
What does it mean that he makes his angels winds and his ministers a flam of fire (7)?
Also have C.S Lewis quote
"It is a serious thing," says Lewis, "to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare.
