Introduction

Last week we ended our study of the Gospel of John with talking about John the Baptist and how he was preparing people for Jesus’s ministry. In our passage today we will see people choose to follow Jesus because of the teaching of John the Baptist.
We are going to switch how we will study John tonight, Instead of me talking for the whole time, we will be doing a group study.
For a group study, you will be split up into your small groups and read through the passage, then you will underline anything observations you see (what happening in the story). After this you will circle any parts of the scripture that you have questions about or that doesn’t make sense to you. Finally you will write in the note section truths that can be applied to your daily life.
John 1:29-42

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him. 33 I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on—he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”,

35 The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”

37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?”

They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”

39 “Come and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.

40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”, (which is translated “the Christ”), 42 and he brought Simon to Jesus.

When Jesus saw him, he said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated “Peter”).

Observations

Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit vs. John the Baptist who baptizes with water.
John’s disciples left him to follow Jesus
Andrew believed that Jesus was the Messiah so much that he introduced his brother to him.

Questions

What does John the Baptist mean when he calls Jesus the Lamb of God?
A Lamb was used in Jewish tradition for the sacrifice for the sins of the Israelites.
Jesus was sacrificed for our sins, so that is why he is referred to as a lamb. Specifically the lamb of God because Jesus was sent by God the Father.
Why did Jesus change Simon’s name to Cephas or Peter?
Back then, names could carry a special meaning. Jesus didn’t legally change Simon’s name but gave him a new name to be called (kinda like a nickname). This usually happens when God uses someone as a foundation for a new movement. Think of Abram to Abraham, Jacob was given the name Israel. Here we see Simon called Peter. Peter means rock and Jesus told Peter that he would part of the foundation of the New Testament Church.

Application

Believe and trust in Jesus that He died for my sins. Even if I have a relationship with Jesus I need to be reminded of this because we can be tempted to have a thinking that I need to do so much good in order for God to like me as a Christ follower. That kind of thinking is a lie for Satan because the truth is that God already loves as much as He can because of Jesus’s sacrifice that covers my sins.
John 1:43-51

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and told him, “Follow me.”

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”

46 “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him.

“Come and see,” Philip answered.

47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

49 “Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!”

50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “Truly I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Observations

Phillip, after being asked to follow Jesus, brought his friend Nathanael to meet Jesus as well.
Before Nathanael had met Jesus, Jesus already knew Nathanael.

Questions

What did it look like to follow Jesus?
It meant that they left their families and jobs and went where ever Jesus went. They gave up everything to join Jesus in his ministry.

Application

Put aside my wants and desires for my life and follow Jesus as Lord of my life.
I need to invite others to know Jesus Christ.
