A) On 3 Occasions in the Gospels Christ commanded us to Hear
These words also appear in the letters to the seven churches in the Revelation.
We will focus on the Gospels.
It is recorded in 6 verses:
Mark 4:9 (NKJV)
9 And He said to them, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
Hear (Greek: akouo’) = to heed, listen, hear or pay close attention to, and usually respond in conformity.
B) Hearing (Listening) can be Passive or Active
Passive Listening
So what is Passive listening?
Passive listening is hearing without giving one’s full attention, usually one direction communication with no feedback.
Our minds become preoccupied and drift in and out of what we are supposedly listening to.
We don’t pay consistent attention to it.
When do I listen passively?
When I am doing two things at once or “multi-tasking”.
Even when I think I’m listening, I’m letting things go in one ear and out the other.
Examples of this include: talking on the phone to your mom while checking Instagram, texting your boyfriend during a lecture in school, or listening to our spouse talk about their day at work while getting ready for bed.
We may “want” to pay attention and we may even defensively defend ourselves when called out on our passive listening saying “yes!
I was totally listening!”
If you’re lucky you may be able to parrot back some of the words that last went into your brain.
We have all been guilty of it on occasion and we have all been annoyed by it in others on other occasions.
Not fully paying attention to your wife while she is chatting with you about the kid’s school, or tuning in and out while your boss is talking during a business meeting can land you in the dog house.
And this can be a minor trip up or a disastrous pitfall depending on who you were passively listening to.
But passive listening isn’t always a bad thing.
Consider these times in which passive listen works well:
Examples when passive listening works well:
Watching a TV show and tuning in and out while you type a letter or do homework
Listening to the radio on your way to work
Listening to music at the gym
Foreign language immersion
When kids are playing in the next room and you are cleaning the house.
Passive listening has its place-just make sure that you are doing it when the time is appropriate!
Active Listening
What is active listening?
Active listening is focusing your attention to fully comprehend and understand to give feedback on what is being heard or complete a certain task.
This is the type of listening that people think of when they want someone to listen and not just hear them.
Active listening includes turning your full attention toward the speaker and trying to make meaning of what they are saying.
Active listening requires two-way communication and connection between the speaker and the listener.
The listener isn’t just going to sit and remain silent, the active listener has a job to do in offering a response to the speaker.
When is it a good time to turn on your active listening?
When your husband is telling you about his hard day at work
When your boss is talking about a promotion opportunity
When your kids are having trouble in school and need your help
When you need to know what to study for a test
When you are watching a Youtube video to learn how to change the headlight in your car
The reality is we need active listening a lot throughout our day.
When those who are important to us need us, we need to tune in and give them our complete attention.
Communication: A mutual and simultaneous interaction between two or more persons in which meaning is creating.
70% of communication is non-verbal.
gestures, tone, body language, inflection, eye contact (or lack thereof), etc. all add to or totally change the meaning of what is said
Example: “I love you too!”
C) Christ Wanted Us HEAR these things:
1) Repentance is measured by what it produces
2) Only the Received Word Produces a Spiritual Harvest
3) There Will Be a Time of Separation
4) Make Sure You Are In the Right Kingdom
Matthew 24:3–14 (NKJV)
3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be?
And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you.
5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars.
See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.
10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another.
11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many.
12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.
13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Nation vs. Nation (Greek word ethnos)
Kingdom vs Kingdom (Greek word means “Nation” or “Sovereignty”
Sovereignty = Supreme power or authority, the authority to self-govern
Note: The Spirit of the Age is Sowing False Kingdoms in the Earth
If we are not careful to HEAR, believers will become entangled in false kingdom building:
Some
Matthew 24:22 (NKJV)
22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
If we are not careful, we can get sucked into the Kingdoms of the Age:
Conservative
Liberal
Republican
Democrat
Biden
Trump
Mask
No-mask
Vax
No-Vax
But it really all boils down to:
My Kingdom
Your Kingdom
Note: You Won’t Find Christ in ANY of the Kingdoms of this World
How to Tell When You Are Building Your Own Kingdom: 1) You Have a Hard Time Submitting to The Word of God
How to Tell When You Are Building Your Own Kingdom: 2) You’ve Got it All Figured Out
How to Tell When You Are Building Your Own Kingdom: 3) Love is in Short Supply (You only like those who share your opinion; disdain those who don’t; and hold on to perceived wrongs.)
James says we are cheating on God!
We focus on building relationships with worldy kingdoms rather than building our relationship with God
