B. God the Son

-Reference these:
The case for Christ - Lee Strobel
Evidence that demands a verdict-Josh McDowell
William Lane Craig, Frank Turek, Greg Koukl, Greg Bahnsen
Many of these are stated facts about Jesus. Those can be found in the sources i showed, and also in the scripture references at the end of the section.
heres what I want to do. I want to work through this statement, and along the way, we are going to stop a few key places where I want to bring out a few things that are supper important to your faith and why its so important to understand who Jesus is.
Eternal son of God
He existed, before time, with all of who God is. He had an active part the creation process ( Colossians 1:16).
John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Did you know that Jesus was not only present before creation, but he was the creator?
Colossians 1:16 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Many say, yea christians say Jesus was God, but Jesus never did.
John 10:30 ESV
30 I and the Father are one.”
John 8:57–59 ESV
57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.
-Conceived of the Holy Spirit
-Born to a virgin (Mary)
-Perfectly revealed and did the will of God
-Identified himself completely with man without sinning
This is important for two reasons:
God doesnt sin. Sin would disqualify him as fully God
If he had sin, then he would be seperated from God and would need someone to shed their blood for him. Only someone dying that had never sinned against God would truly be able to “just die for sinners.”
-honored the law by obedience
Jesus did not dismiss the old testmant. He actually shoved us further into it by quoting it and obeying it.
-died on cross to provide the redemption of men from sin (substitutionary)
Why did Jesus have to die?
Exodus 34:5–7 ESV
5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
See the dilema?
Is God a liar or is he bi-polar? How could he punish sin and forgive sin?
1 Timothy 2:5–6 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
Colossians 2:13–14 ESV
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
The gospel is that God will always punish sin and execute justice. He has said that he will show mercy to sinners. This is the work that was done on the cross.
-raised from the dead with a glorified body
We will talk about this more in a second
-appeared to his disciples (was the same person as before crucifiction)
John 20:24–28 ESV
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
Luke 24:36–41 ESV
36 As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!” 37 But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit. 38 And he said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” 40 And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41 And while they still disbelieved for joy and were marveling, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
-ascended into heaven
-now is at the right hand of the God
This is actually good news.
Hebrews 7:25 ESV
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
-The One Mediator, fully God, fully man,
This is something that I actually didnt understand until a couple of years ago.
What does Jesus look like now? Now that he is in heaven. I believe most christians accept this teaching. Scripture doesnt seem to lead us to any other conclusion, but that Jesus is still fully man and fully God, even in heaven. He wasnt always man. He was once fully God, alone. We really dont have anything in scripture that really hints of a time where he would go back to being fully God, alone (that im aware of)

Present tense verses about Jesus that would be evidence
Colossians 2:9 ESV
9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Revelation 1:17–18 ESV
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
-in whose person is effected the reconciliation between God and Man
2 Corinthians 5:19–21 ESV
19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
His identity as mediator drives him to reconcile. This is what he does, its who he is.
He is the reconciler.
-will return in power and glory to judge the world
-will return in power and glory to consummate his redemptive mission
-Now dwells in all believers as the living and ever present Lord
Besides atonement, this may be the most comforting doctrine to me
Philippians 1:6 (ESV)
6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 3:16–19 ESV
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
