The personal benefits to Spiritual Giftedness

As we continue with the gift-oriented mindset tonight we are looking at eight reasons we should have this mindset, personally and for the church.
Eight personal reasons to be gift-oriented.
To become a living and holy sacrifice (Rom12:1)
To not be conformed to the world (Rom12:2)
To teach personal humility (Rom12:3)
To add value to personal ministry (Rom12:4)
To teach oneness in the body of Christ (Rom12:5)
To better understand “He” who gives (Eph4:7-10)
To bring the church to her fullness (Eph4:11-13)
To bring glory to God (1Pt4:10-11)
(Transition) - Let’s get into the eight reasons and see if we can get to a discussion tonight on the questions found on page 10 of the workbook
To become a living and holy sacrifice (Rom12:1)
Romans 12:1 NASB95
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
We are called, urged, to be a living sacrifice. A continual process. (Consider this)
Let me ask a quick question what is a sacrifice?
Oxford: “An act of slaughtering an animal or surrendering a possession as an offering to God or to a divine or supernatural figure.”
Dictionary.com says: “the surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim.
Do you get the idea of dying here? Consider this
1 Corinthians 15:31 NASB95
31 I affirm, brethren, by the boasting in you which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
Our body as a living sacrifice is a daily sacrifice, dying to self and living for God. A sacrifice worthy of the calling.
Ephesians 4:1 NASB95
1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
Called by the gospel
Called into a life-long relationship with God through Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit
Called to walk in the light (1Jn1:7) resulting in relationship with the creator of the universe (Jn1:3)
To not be conformed to this world (Rom12:2)
Romans 12:2 NASB95
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Some definitions
Conformed “to fashion oneself into the shape of another.”
Something we do to ourselves
Transformed: “To changed the form of; to change the shape or appearance; to metamorphose.
This comes from the Greek word metamorphoo, and it a term passive in action, meaning we allow to occur to us.
God does the work, God transforms us, from glory to glory as it says in (2Cor3:18)
Doug Hamilton says
“For the non-conforming Christian there awaits a wonderful transformation by God.”
(Potters wheel PowerPoint here)
Jeremiah 18:6 NASB95
6 “Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel.
To teach personal humility (Rom12:3)
Romans 12:3 NASB95
3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.
Humility- A modest or low view of one’s own importance. (Dictonary.com)
Humility is something that, is direly needed within the church.
Ephesians 4:2 NASB95
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
Humility coupled with Spiritual gifts help us to recognize the value of others.
To add value to personal ministry (Rom12:4)
Romans 12:4 NASB95
4 For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,
We should have the same hope (Jesus Christ and eternal life in His name) but each has his own giftedness as distributed by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:14–15 NASB95
14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body.
1 Corinthians 12:16–17 NASB95
16 And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be?
1 Corinthians 12:18 NASB95
18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.
Personal value by the diversity of the gifts distributed and the gifts needed for the whole
To teach us the oneness of the body of Christ (Rom12:5)
Romans 12:5 NASB95
5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.
and add to that
Ephesians 4:3–4 NASB95
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling;
Ephesians 4:5–6 NASB95
5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
The employment and deployment of the spiritual gifts not only brings unity, but brings out the best of all the members
To better understand He who gives (Eph4:7-10)
Ephesians 4:7–8 NASB95
7 But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says, When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, And He gave gifts to men.”
Ephesians 4:9–10 NASB95
9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
The gifts unto men can be found also in (PS68:18) which is where it is being quoted from. Christ had the gifts to be able to give the gifts.
Gifts unto men
Prophet (Mt7:29)
Service (Mk10:45)
Teacher (Mt19:16)
Exhortation (1Cor1:10)
Giver (Act20:35)
Mercy giver (1Tim1:2)
Leader (Mt23:10)
Shepherd (1Pt5:4)
Evangelist (Mt9:35)
Missionary (Mk16:15)
As we will start looking at the gifts, define the gifts, explain the gifts and look at the deployment of the gifts personally and as a congregation we will better understand jesus the giver of the gifts.
To bring the church to her fullness (Eph4:11-13)
Ephesians 4:11–12 NASB95
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
Ephesians 4:13 NASB95
13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
Some points from the book (pg 9 of the workbook)
The Spiritual Gifts assist the church in being able to operate as a well-oiled machine
When applied properly and passionately the congregation is fully equipped for service to others
They are able to build up one another in Christ, unite in faith, grow in knowledge and endeavor to reach the measure of the stature of Christ.
The end result, the ultimate end is the fullness of Christ in their hearts and their minds
(Below not on a slide, just quote it)
Philippians 4:7 NASB95
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
(Transition) We still have one more of the eight to look at
To bring glory to God (1Pt4:10-11)
1pt4:10-11
1 Peter 4:10–11 NASB95
10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Glorying God
It is a part of every Christians primary Job description (see Mt5:16)
(below not on screen; just quote it)
Matthew 5:16 NASB95
16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Lord willing this is only about 15 minutes long to this point and should have plenty of time to discuss the questions, allow for interactive discussion.
Questions from pg. 10 of workbook
Write down and think about the eight (8) reasons why we should be gift-oriented in our mind-set.
Which of the eight (8) personal benefits of Spiritual Giftedness is most appreciated by you? Why?
What is it important for Christians to take personal ownership of their spiritual gifts in reflection to the corporate vision of the church?
What are some of the ways we can encourage others to embrace their God-given passions?
