Incompatible love: Sin and child of God

Previously we looked at “sin” that is incompatible with the child of God.
Sin is incompatible with the law of God (1Jn3:4-6)
Sin is incompatible with the works of Christ (1Jn3:7)
Sin is incompatible with the destroyed works of the devil (1Jn3:8-10)
But on the other hand.
Love is compatible with the law of God (Lev19:18)
Not on the screen, just quote the scriptures
Leviticus 19:18 NASB95
18 ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.
Love is compatible with the works of Christ (Jn15:13)
John 15:13 NASB95
13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
Love is compatible with the destroyed works of the devil (1Jn2:13-14)
Below is on the screen now!
1 John 2:13 NASB95
13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.
1 John 2:14 NASB95
14 I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
A couple of quick reminders
The one who practices sin, is “of the devil”
1 John 3:8 NASB95
8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.
The one born of God, well check it out
1 John 3:9 NASB95
9 No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
The one born of God does not practice sin, because of the see abiding in Him
(Transition) So, tonight we are looking at love is compatible
Tonight
Love compatible from the beginning (1JN3:10-18)
Love compatible with prayer (1Jn3:19-22)
Love is a compatible command with Christian lifestyle (1Jn3:23-24)

Love compatible from the beginning

Apostle of love, John is commonly referred by that name, so it is not surprising that there is much written about love and the love of God in his gospel and in his epistles. So let’s glean together at the love that is compatible for children of God.
1 John 3:10–11 NKJV
10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. 11 For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,
1 John 3:12–13 NKJV
12 not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his works were evil and his brother’s righteous. 13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.
1 John 3:14–15 NKJV
14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
1 John 3:16–17 NKJV
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
1 John 3:18 NKJV
18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
Anything stick out to you in this passage?
Gleaning from the scripture
What is obvious in (v.10)?
Children of God and children of the devil are easily distinguished, by love and righteousness.
What is the message heard from the beginning (v.11)?
That we should love one another
How can we tell if we have passed from death to life (v.14)?
Because we love the brethren.
A couple more points here
The command is to lay down our lives for the brethren (v.16) and then.
In (vv.17-18) we see how, by not only word, but by deed and truth.
Love that is compatible
From the beginning (1Jn1:1-2); Love for the brethren (1Jn2:7-10)
love that was seen, heard, handled (Jesus); and his love for others, and the command to love one another because the true light (Jesus) is already shining.
From the beginning even as Jesus commanded (Jn13:34-35)
John 13:34–35 NKJV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The results of the love that is compatible is that all men will know you are Jesus disciples
Manifested love : Manifest: To show or demonstrate plainly; to reveal, to be evidence of; to prove. - - - that is what is manifested, love that proves your a child of God that you are a disciple
Love that is compatible should not be surprised by incompatibility with children of the devil (vv.12-13)
Cain and Abel (v.12), came from the works of the devil and the child of God, they are incompatible
Cain killed Abel because of his heart, Cain represented the world and we too should not be surprised if the world hates us too.
John 15:18–19 NASB95
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
John 15:20 NASB95
20 “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
words spoken to the apostles to warn them to keep in remembrance
Love that is compatible takes us from death to life (vv.13-15)
1 John 3:13–15 NASB95
13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you. 14 We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. 15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
Brotherly love is a sign of a true conversion, it is not the only sign, but a good sign of it.
Another sign is practiced righteousness (1Jn3:10)
Christ’s example of compatible love (vv.16-18)
He laid down His life for us, so in turn we should follow the example and lay down our life for the brethren.
You see a need, meet a need, don’t close your heart off to others. Don’t love in word alone, but in deed and truth.

Love is compatible in prayer

First we have the proof then we have the promise, see what you can see in this section.
1 John 3:19–20 NASB95
19 We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him 20 in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
1 John 3:21–22 NASB95
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.
What sticks out to you in this passage?
Gleaning from the scripture
What will we know and be assured in our hearts before Him (v.19)?
That we are of the truth.
What is God greater than (v.20)?
God is greater than our heart.
Why can we know that we will receive whatever we ask for (v.22)?
Because we keep His commands, and we do what is pleasing to Him.
Things we can know about our compatible love
We will know we are of the truth by our love.
We will have assurance by our love
We will know that God is greater than our own condemnation
We receive because we obey.
We can ask in prayer and receive because we obey and we live to please him. Compatible love seeks God’s will for others and for self to help others (love of the brethren)

Love is a compatible command with Christian lifestyle

Application section by choice by command that is confirmed by the gift given.
1 John 3:23–24 NASB95
23 This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us. 24 The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
Anything stick out to you in this passage?
Gleaning from the scripture
What is the command(s) given in (v.23)?
Believe in the name of Jesus Christ, and love one another
What is the promise to the one who abides in Him (v.24)?
That He abides in us, by the Spirit.
Things to consider, is it a choice or a command?
It is a command, an imperative
What does it mean to believe in the name of His Son?
you must believe in the person and the purpose and the belief is an action (to keep the commands)
What is the proof that we believe?
We keep the commands and we love the brethren
What is the the assurance given and how does that play into the love that is compatible?
A Christian can have assurance by his love and by the gift of the Holy Spirit that dwell in Him.
So there is one more question to ask tonight, is love that is compatible in YOU?
