I. Peter’s Confession vs. 27-30
I. Peter’s Confession vs. 27-30
A. The Jews couldn’t fathom that they were wrong about Jesus being Messiah, so they had all sorts of crazy notions about Him.
B. Peter didn’t hesitate to tell who Jesus was.
C. Remember the passage from Matt. 16:16-19. It would have been self-serving for Peter to tell Mark that.
Matt. 16:16-19 “Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. “I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.””
D. Jesus didn’t want them telling who He was because He didn’t want a confrontation with the religious leaders, until the appointed time.
II. Peter’s Rebuke vs. 31-33
II. Peter’s Rebuke vs. 31-33
A. It’s not that the disciples didn’t know what was going to happen to Jesus, they wanted Jesus to be wrong.
B. Peter went from the mountain top to being rebuked, in a matter of mins.
C. The other disciples were in agreement, since Peter was their spokesman.
D. Our doctrine needs to be grounded in scripture not feelings.
E. Could they have wanted Jesus to not drive the crowds away with this suffering Messiah talk?
III. Peter’s Lesson: 8:34-9:1
III. Peter’s Lesson: 8:34-9:1
A. You can’t serve yourself and God. Give up on your dreams and let God live His life through you, so that you’ll have the dreams that Jesus has for you.
B. Our crosses aren’t the hard things in life, it’s the hard things in life that derive from the gospel. (Missionaries of Old ex)
C. There are many phonies, who will deny Christ when the going get tough. Some only deny Him in their hearts.
D. Jesus is referring to the transfiguration that happens shortly after this sermon.
