17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
Jesus is personal to you
John the Baptist Testimony
19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said: “I am ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Make straight the way of the Lord,” ’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”
John was the last prophet. He comes onto the scene int he Bible 400 years after Malachi, as a forerunner to Christ. He is bridging the gap between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
The Pharisees sent priests to question John the Baptist.
A voice crying out in the wilderness...
3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God.
John the Baptist is humble.
24 Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25 And they asked him, saying, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, saying, “I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. 27 It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose.” 28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
Christ was among them but the did not recognize Him.
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ 31 I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
The Lamb of God takes away the sins of the world! In the Old Testament, there is a struggle between blood and the lamb… hundreds of thousands of lambs sacrificed throughout Old Testament history then Jesus is the Lamb of God who will take all of the sins away from the world. Sin causes death, but through the Lamb of God we find everlasting life in Christ.
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
9 It came to pass in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. 11 Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
This is the first time that the Holy Spirit stayed in a human body.
When we are born again, the Holy Spirit comes upon us and dwells within us. John baptizes with water whereas Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
35 Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour). 40 One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is translated, A Stone).
V37 is the start of evangelism.
v38 they answered a question with a question.
v40 Andrew brought Simon Peter to Jesus - evangelizing again.
v42 Jesus knew Simon’s name .. Simon meant shifting sand.. changed his name to Cephas (Peter) which means a stone.
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”
Follow me is used 14 times by Jesus in the New Testament.
V51: Heavens open and angels ascending and descending upon the Son of Man
12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
Jesus is bridging the gap between heaven and earth.
Andrew was cautious, Peter was preposterous, Phillip was shy, Thomas was doubting but the message was same… Follow Me
In John 2, Jesus shows 2 of 7 signs that is in the book of John in order that you may believe. A sign is something that Jesus uses to teaches us with and may include a miracle which is something out of the ordinary.
1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, “Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.” And they took it. 9 When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. 10 And he said to him, “Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!”
V2. Jesus was invited to the wedding along with His disciples
V3 the mother of Jesus was there… not mentioned by her name Mary
God oversaw the first marriage in the Garden of Eden. Jesus is preforming His first sign at a wedding.
V6 ...six waterpots of stone...
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.
V5 .. Whatever He says, do it. V7.. they filled it to the brim.
They did their best they could do.. pots were not half full but filled to the top, the brim.. point of overflowing
11 This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He, His mother, His brothers, and His disciples; and they did not stay there many days.
v11 … and manifested His glory...
13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business. 15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.” 18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?” 19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” 20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?” 21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said. 23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.
V13 Oxen to the wealthy, sheep to the middle class, and doves to the lower class
V16 Church and business do not mix.
V17 “Zeal for your house” is in Psalms 69:9
V20 This was Herod’s temple
V24 He knew man has a sinful heart yet He still loves you!
