INTRODUCTION: You have potential.
1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.
levi - priestly line. Huge. (they weren’t priest yet. But they would be.
2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
three months - quite place haha illustration.
fine - apocrpha - said he was beautiful, so much so that people would stop and stare. Prob not though. we all think our kid is the best.
3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.
basket - same word for ark - All the other times its mentioned in OT was Genesis 6-8.
bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch -
This is a common theme among ancient religions. But probably means this actually happened a lot.
placed it among the reeds by the river bank - so they did not just let it float down the river. But intentionally placed. Which was bold.
4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.
sister - Miriam. Big character later.
daughter of pharoah - likely had many kids. (think solomon).
They thought Nile was supernatural. Maybe thought child was a gift from the gods.

Hebrews 11:23 (ESV)
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.
6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
pity on him - how could you not?
Hebrew children - probably circumcised? clothes?
She made a choice here - she could have killed him in the nile like her father commaded, but no.
7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.
sister comes out. Maybe she was already a servant there. We don’t know.
Hebrew wet nurse was a common practice.
I will give you wages - mom got paid to take care of her son! This was the best possible circumstance.
Pharoh tried to kill all the boys. Then a little boy who grew up in his own house. This is how God works.
10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”
grew older - weaned at age three.
Moses - drew him out of the water. Also meant father.

Start fresh puzzel???
11 One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.
grown up - he was forty. A long time being a prince.
his people -TWICE. obviously he knew he was Hebrew. This would create quite a complex.
slaver drivers would yell out - work without fainting!
They could kill slaves and just pay a small penilty. But prob no reprussions for him since he was likely employed and under authority of Prahoah.
12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
looked this way and that - He should have looked up. Its ok to act in self defence of others. but if you have to look around first to make sure no one can see you. You shouldn’t do it. then if you hide it too!
He certainly had authority to stop it. But he chose rage instead.
13 When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?” 14 He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”
Now Hebrews were fighting. He steps in again. They
15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.
It was know! There was a death penalty. Probably some sort of half brother of Moses.
land of mideian (map?). Some indication that people might have worship God there.
Midian was the fourth son of Abraham, by his second wife Keturah Related to the Hebrews, Semetic

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
seven daughters, - huffs!
17 The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock.
shepherds - not always the greatest people. In fact, they had poor reputation.
Moses protected people. He continually is a leader and someone who is protecting the helpless.
18 When they came home to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?” 19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered the flock.”
an Egyptian - notice, from the outside he looked Egyptian.
Exodus 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” 21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah. 22 She gave birth to a son, and he called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”
Where is he? ladies, don’t do this!
He had been a sojourner in a foreign land for a long time, He did not realize it when he was Egypt. But he already was.
Sometimes we forget how to
