Truth Matters
Etched into the halls of academia is a statement, that once held a bold value. Veritas Vos Liberabit
The statement found at the renown John Hopkins University, is emblematic of what these institutes of higher learning once stood for. That is TRUTH.
The statement is a latin phrase which means The Truth Will Set You Free.
Today not just in academia but in every facet of our life, truth, is under assault.
You have probably heard the most current statement… veritas toua, veritas mia, veritas omnium… jk just trying to church it up a bit… but the saying is your truth, my truth… everyones truth as if, What is true for you, can be untrue for me, so everyone has their own truth...
Our entire existence hangs in the balance of what we profess to be true.
Our entire existence hangs in the balance of what we profess to be true.
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John Hopkins University is not the one to come up with the statement… it is a statement that is made by Jesus
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
It is important to know why Jesus said it
many had a claim to truth
previous chapters exemplify the contention He had with the religious institution and educational institution that had claimed a stake to knowing truth.
Conditions to knowing truth was to abide in the very word of God.
Jesus makes a bold claim that you must know what truth is…
Only One True Truth
Only One True Truth
Claim to subjective truth…
your, mine, everyones is based on a feeling , or thought
Relative to:
Father’s Day comes Hallmark prints a million cards that say To The Best Dad in the whole World…Kid asks am I the favorite?
What is cold for you is not cold for me…
This truth can change…
Claim to objective truth...
Only one truth and there is a way to know what is actually true
These truths are true no matter what… they never change.
Cold-is scientifically accepted as anything below 46 degrees.
No Issue until Ethics and Morality
Texas- Passed and anti-abortion bill… people from both sides came out to support and to protest
The struggle… not about the woman’s body… its about the baby inside… when does life begin?
Free will to choose to do right or wrong… Psalm 139:13-16 “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
Claim to the Truth
Claim to the Truth
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus claims there to be no other way to know truth… He is the truth.
There is no other truth apart from Christ.
Morality and Truth because of evolution…
No male dog ever thought hmmm… geee I really like this girl dog. I am going to ask her on a date, then we are going to wait until we are married before having puppies.
Humanity was made (a) in the image of God and of humanity the Lord says (b) I will place my word on their hearts
Universal Truths, their can only be one source and that is Christ…
The Truth Will Set You Free
The Truth Will Set You Free
Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.
So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,
for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
We know there now to be a Ceremonial Law, Civil Laws, and the Moral Law-Not about the first two…
Moral law given by the moral law giver… the only source of truth will stay with us until the return of Christ
Ceremonial and Civil Laws are set as guardians to help the people know right from wrong… These laws are based on the moral law.
Jesus Christ declares Himself to be the truth… and what is testified about Him is that He is the Word.
John 8:31-32 “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.””
There is a truth… is not one premised on my perspective it is one that is aligned with His Word
We can live life without His word and remain enslaved to the sin of the world… or we can be set free by the Truth found in His Word
In the instances of Ethics and Morality, I have to come to terms with What Does His Word Say?
If Psalms tells us the Lord has taken the time to form our most inner parts… who are we to violate that?
If Genesis tells us that life is in the blood, who are we to deny it?
If Hebrews Tells us He will be God to us, and we will be His people who are we to play God for ourselves?
I choose to live life according to His truth and not my own. I choose to abide in Christ that I may know truth and be set free.
