The Groot Effect:

Mark 8:23–25 ESV
And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.
Jesus’ opposition is beyond just the Pharisees, the chief priests, and the scribes. It is embedded in nature itself. As the spiritual evil forces wage war in this world.
Ephesians 6:12 ESV
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Pharisees ask for a sign

Mark 8:12 ESV
And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

Don’t Focus on the Bread

Mark 8:14 ESV
Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.

Jesus’ Teaching

Mark 8:15 ESV
And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
What is the bread? What is the Leaven? How Does Leaven act upon bread?

Disciples still on the bread

Mark 8:16–18 ESV
And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?
Isaiah 42:18–20 ESV
Hear, you deaf, and look, you blind, that you may see! Who is blind but my servant, or deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is blind as my dedicated one, or blind as the servant of the Lord? He sees many things, but does not observe them; his ears are open, but he does not hear.

JESUS AFFIRMS THE SIGNS GIVEN

Mark 8:19–21 ESV
When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”

Take Care of the Little things so you can focus on the big things.

Don’t take your eyes off Jesus.
2 Timothy 2:20–21 ESV
Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
Matthew 25:23 ESV
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
Romans 12:2 ESV
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
James 2:19 ESV
You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!
