3. The Lord Corrects. vs.21-28
Complacency (1828 definition 2) - the cause of pleasure
When someone is satisfied with their self.
When someone is satisfied with their surroundings.
When someone is satisfied with their sins.
To deal with these complacent Pharisees Jesus gave two MEASURES of correction.
I. Correcting Things Should Be In The Past. Vs.21-22
I. Correcting Things Should Be In The Past. Vs.21-22
21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.
22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.
Christ is the new cloth, Judaism is the old.
Jesus offers us a new garment (a robe of righteousness) not a patch for our worn out garment.
Christ is the new wine that breaks the bottles.
II. Correcting Things That Are in The Present. Vs.23-28
II. Correcting Things That Are in The Present. Vs.23-28
What they brought up.
23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
ESV, NIV, NLT, NKJV, HCSB, RSV, ASV, NASB changes “corn” to “grain”
24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
Who: Jesus, His disciples, the Pharisees
What: the disciples were plucking corn, the Pharisees criticised them for it
The Pharisees would have broken the law by walking out to where this takes place.
Thus accusing one while excusing another (Romans 2:15)
When: on the Sabbath
Where: in a field
Why: they set out to find fault in Jesus
How: by referring to the law
What Jesus Brought up. vs.25-28

David’s hunger was an emergency. This emergency justified the discarding of the rules about the showbread. If an emergency could discard the showbread laws, then how much more could the emergency of the disciples’ need of food discard the man-made Sabbath rules of these critics.
The example of the shewbread. v.26
26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
ESV changes “shewbread” to “the bread of the Presence” which will go along with the Roman Catholic Mass
NLT changes “shewbread” to “bread of the sacred loaves”
HCSB changes “shewbread” to “the sacred bread”
The example of the sabbath. v.27
27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
NLT changes “man” to gender inclusive “people”
They forget that the overall purpose of the law is justice, not the keeping of the law.
“Christianity has had to fight this same battle about institutionalism. The church itself is for man, not man for the church.”
The example of the Saviour. v.28
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
