The were wanting to distract him… and we play that game where we want to distract ourselves from what it is that God is wanting us to do…so last week we saw the political distraction… so when people call us out on our sins, we say well what about Trump, and everyone gets distracted…
Now they come in and aren’t going against politics…but theology.... and Jesus was basically saying you could have the greatest of politics but not have salvation… and Now they are going to say what about theology… and Jesus is going to say you can have good theology and not get salvation either....
23 The same day Sadducees came to him, who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question,
The reason they don’t believe in the resurrection is important.... the reason they say that is not because they didn’t believe in miracles… but because they had a lot of power and resurrection would overthrow power structures and they wanted no part of that. and they also didnt believe in the whole Bible… most Jews believed in the whole Bible… the sadducees only believed in the first five books of the Bible, the torah, and they didn’t see any resurrection theology in those books.
Resurrection theology gets developed in the prophetic books of the Bible… these guys didnt take the whole scripture and say it was the authority of their lives… and I want you to be able to do that in your life.
HERE This moment is solid… it is easy… and I can just come out and do this… and the rest of the week is the hard stuff… and when you are going through the storms of your life you need to build your life on the Bible… its not about just reading what other people think, its about hearing the scripture in YOUR life. Its what is solid… people will let you down. CHurches let you down. You need to believe it from beginning to end. Its fully true. IT should be fully authoritative… and they didnt believe that… and here is Jesus pushing back.... look at verse 29
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.
You aren’t leaning in on what is important… you don’t have your authority in the right place…and he’s almost scared for them. and for some of you the scriptures arent a formative part of your existence and he is pushing back against you and wanting you to use it… he is basically telling you the exact same thing.. the minute people try to play games he pushes back and says you didnt even know the scriptures
Sadducees didnt believe… but he is going to prove it....
30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.
No one is married in Heaven.... Ill get to the question
31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God:
32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”
Its fascinating that his proof text is frmo the book of exodus… the place where they actually read.. using their own bible that they recognize as authoritative… He is not the God of the dead but the living… don’t you understand the resurrection reality… they thought resurrection was silly… we all die and become spirit people… we live our life now and become a disembodied spirit.... and clouds and diapers and that is what heaven is going to be like… the problem is that is not true biblically… and secondly we don’t really get excited about clouds and wings and all that… we don’t have an appetite for that and an appetite for heaven because thats what we see… and we were created physical, and we are designed to love those physical things… and what Jesus and the New Testament theology says that the final state is that of resurrection.... when the new jerusalem comes down and meets earth… and we are resurrected.
Watch kids running around how in the world can they do that…But we are old… in the world all evil and destruction will be reversed… not the world nuked… resurrection is about being restored physical… just like Jesus… he was the prototype… its a restored resurrected earth.. and eternity that is physical.... Gandalf sitting with a hobbit… and its far closer to the Christian version of Heaven than most of us have been taught.
Thats more physical of heaven
IF we aren’t physical in eternity then in essence God loses… if sin destroyed the body and we cant live that way for eternity then what he wanted didnt come to fruition and we lose.
He wanted us to have all these things, but satan ruined it all, and youre just going to be a disembodied spirit… come on man thats not what he wanted....
Moana tifiti doesnt defeat the evil it restores her… big fire demon… She doesnt destroy her, she gives her her heart back and the evil gets redeemed… and that is unique… -its a restorative story.... some thigns wont get redeemed… satan… but there are some things that will come back
Even if yo uare a sadducee and you dont believe in thsoe things you should want to… and listen

33 And when the crowd heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.
and they were astonished.. and my question is when you hear the story of Jesus are you astonished.. when he gives you this great restoration… every delight you can imagine… how do I actually participate in this… here is the story they raise and try to trap him back up to verse 24
24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’
They are going to try to show him how dumb and childish it is for the resurrection and to believe in it… according to the law if I am married and I die my brother has to marry her… she couldnt survive without a husband.... dont worry I have my brother he can marry you...
24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’
25 Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother.
26 So too the second and third, down to the seventh.
27 After them all, the woman died.
What is she doing to these guys? She’s knocking them off… after them all she finally dies.... who’s wife will she be… this is silly if she has seven husbands is she going to walk around with them all and thats just dumb…
28 In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”
We will be like angels in the sense that we won’t be married in Heaven… and here is the reality… the reason there is no marriage in heaven is we will have a pleasure that eclipses marriage....
CHristian HS teacher… sat with students asked if you were going to die in a week what would you want to do… 1. skydive… 2. Travel… 3. sex… of course… and he said it was so powerful that sex and companionship is so powerful and Jesus is saying Heaven is so great that the thing we think of most is retired because we get something better… we have to realize he died and rose again to have victory over sin and death to give us a new resurrection so we get what is better… not a consolation… losing loved ones and there is more than that...
if resurrection is true something better is coming… and Jesus is the way to get there… he marries his people the church…
Not marrying you as an individual but as a group… all individual marriages collapse....
