Sermon Outline

Romans 3:21–31 ESV
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
This week will be more of a walk through scripture on the white board than a sermon.
- Everything we have studied so far has brought us to Romans 3:23
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
All have sinned. Every single person that has lived. No one, except Jesus is exempt.
- Which leads us to not only have all sinned, but all have access to grace.
Verse 24. The all counts toward this also.
Romans 3:24 ESV
24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
-But does this mean that all are justified?
NO We have to go back to verse 22. That is the qualifying statement.
Romans 3:22 ESV
22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
-So how does this all work? I mean so i just believe in Jesus and Im saved?
Well yes, but theres a lot more that has happened that you dont see.
I mean what are you believing?
Romans 3:25 ESV
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
Lets look at the old testament to understand Gods grace and his judgement.
unpack verse 25 in light of:
Exodus 12:6–7 ESV
6 and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. 7 “Then they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which they eat it.
and then
Exodus 33:17–23 ESV
17 And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 Moses said, “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name ‘The Lord.’ And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20 But,” he said, “you cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
Exodus 34:6–8 ESV
6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth and worshiped.
We are going to go back to Genesis next week to understand the covenant that God made with Abraham that tells us what to expect and explains this stuff God is telling Moses, but for now,
Jesus has done so much for your salvation.
-Our response is to believe:
Romans 10:9 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
What do you think he means in v25b to 26?
Romans 3:25–26 ESV
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Do i need to explain forbearance again?
-There is a reality where everyone that has and will believe in Jesus has had and will have all their sins forgiveness because of Gods forbearance.
How did the OT Israelites survive God’s judgement? Those that had faith in Jesus lived under God’s forbearance. Hebrews 11 is talking about this
How can God forgive all my sins, past, present, and future? Gods forbearance.
Verse 26 is the answer to Moses’ dilema in Exodus 34!!!
Romans 3:26 ESV
26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Unpack the law of faith - v27-31
Romans 3:27–31 ESV
27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
The only thing we bring to this deal is neediness, brokeness, and sin, to the point that we have no other option, we only believe God can do it.
This is what faith looks like
John 6:66–68 ESV
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life,
